Purpose of Job:


To support the Executive in providing strategic communications to a company wide audience, as well as to senior external stakeholders - ensuring that employees at all levels are kept up to date with relevant strategic, operational, and other information,whilst also supporting the communication of that corporate narrative to influential external audiences.


  • To work closely with the Executive, heads of department and managers to establish organisational messaging.
  • To develop and maintain an internal communications strategy and communications plan to support the MDU's business objectives.
  • To deliver all internal communications in accordance with the internal communications strategy.
  • To maintain an external Stakeholder Relationship Audit workbook to support external engagement priorities.
  • To continually develop and populate the MDU's intranet content, ensuring this becomes the go to source for all staff communication and engagement activity

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the Company's strategy, initiatives and projects are successfully communicated to internal and external stakeholders
  • Ensure internal communications messages are consistent and in line with the MDU strategy
  • Assist the Executive Office in drafting messages or presentations, in written, visual or spoken form
  • Support internal change programmes with creating an appropriate communications plan.
  • Provide a framework for effective communication channels and processes, which ensure people have access to the information they need
  • Promote the use of the MDU staff intranet, brining colleagues from across the business together.
  • Plan, edit and write strong, relevant content to inform and engage MDU staff and stakeholders
  • Manage stakeholder expectations and keep them informed of progress to key milestones
  • Uses fresh thinking, creative ideas, turning complex information into clear proposals and engaging content for internal audience
  • Work closely with the Emergency Response Team (ERT) to handle the internal communication response to crisis situations which affect organisational perception and reputation
  • To provide the line management for a Communications Officer, including (but not limited to) identifying and agreeing work priorities, setting objectives, managing performance and development.
  • To support the training and development of MDU colleagues in communication best practice

Qualifications and skills

  • Experience in relevant communications roles preferably with some involvement in developing and delivering communications strategies
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills with experience in writing for different audiences
  • Strong interpersonal skills including influencing, negotiating, and relationshipbuilding with the ability to deal confidently with senior colleagues and explain communication techniques to them.
  • Ability to gain credibility quickly in dealing with and advising senior managers and the Executive
  • Strong speaking/presentation skills and ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholders
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organisation and problemsolving skills
  • Comfortable dealing with change, ambiguity, and conflicting priorities
  • Knowledge of digital media tools and how they can be used to connect and influence engagement
  • Experience of employee engagement activities
  • Understands stakeholder communications, internal communications and employee engagement
  • Previous experience supervising and training team members
  • Experience in a similar role, where crafting communications strategy and plans are central
