About the Borough

This special place in South West London between the capital and the country has been a Royal borough longer than anywhere else - it is where the first kings of England were crowned.

Today it is a vibrant and diverse borough, with a long history and strong cultural and community heritage.

Kingston's riverside location, fantastic retail offer, historic market place and church, parks and gardens all make Kingston town centre the vibrant space it is, and each of our district town centres (Surbiton, New Malden, Tolworth and Chessington) have something unique to offer.

Situated in Zone 6, Kingston is among the best-connected town centres in London - with direct train links from Kingston and Surbiton stations to Clapham Junction and London Waterloo, as well as Wimbledon for an interchange with the London Underground and Tramlink.

Kingston's people are innovative and entrepreneurial, and have a strong sense of community pride.

The borough has been home to great industry and creativity for many years, reflected in assets such as the Rose Theatre, the International Youth Arts Festival and Kingston University, which boasts more new graduate business start-ups than any other.

We have seen tremendous generosity and compassion within our communities, particularly in response to COVID-19, which is a demonstration of Kingston's key strength.

The council offers a strong level of support to vulnerable groups and those who need additional support, which has also increased significantly as a result of the pandemic.

Like most places, the average age of our population is rising as more people are living longer, so we are working closely with residents to help them maintain their independence and further improve the cost effectiveness of our service to meet the ongoing rise in demand.

Kingston is home to people from diverse and interesting cultures and backgrounds, which helps to create the rich sense of community shared across the borough.

In particular, Kingston has a large Sri Lankan Tamil community and is home to more people from Korea than any other part of the UK.

About the Role

As a Resident Engagement and Social Value Lead Officer, you will be working collaboratively with the Cambridge Road Estate (CRE) team and the Council's Joint Venture partner, Countryside Partnerships, to ensure that residents are firmly at the heart of the Cambridge Road Estate regeneration project.

You will be responsible for achieving meaningful involvement of residents and delivering on the social value outcomes that have been identified through the Social Value Strategy.

You will be working on the Cambridge Road Estate Regeneration project. This is the Council's largest housing estate and is situated in the Council's most deprived ward.

Sub-projects include:

  • Supporting the Community Board with management of the Community Chest fund. This fund gives small grants for projects that benefit the CRE community.
  • Developing the social value action plan.
  • Developing the measurement and impact assessments of social value as they relate to the regeneration project.
No two days are the same But here is what a day in the life would be:

  • Co-ordination of the Regeneration Update Report for the Community Board, an important part of the governance structure for the joint venture.
  • Work with the Programme Lead to develop and update project and subproject plans to understand dependencies.
  • Join a project group involving colleagues across the council to develop the proposals for the new Community Hub which will be constructed as part of phase 1 of the regeneration.
  • Working closely with the Communications Lead on the content and production of the CRE Newsletter.
  • Meet with Countryside Partnerships to develop the social value action plan for CRE.
  • Attend the Youth Club to develop links with both the youth workers and the young people (CRE has a younger age profile than that of Kingston and England 52% of CRE residents are under 30).

This is a forward facing role with responsibility for resident engagement and delivering social value on the ground - it will be site-based and will involve some weekend/evening working.

About Us
The CRE Team is a small team tasked to deliver a Council's first regeneration project. The culture is very much "can-do, will do".

There are inevitably tasks that fall between the cracks of role profiles - co-operation and collaboration from everyone in the team is expected to get the job done.

We are not afraid to try new things within a context of continuous improvement - we take time to reflect on what has gone wel
