Grace Neighbourhood Nursery

Context and purpose of the Job


The Special Education Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) is responsible for the day to day operation of the setting's Special Educational Needs and Inclusion Policy to ensure that children with Special Educational Needs are fully included into the early years setting.


Qualification
Level 3 Childcare qualification (Essential)
At least 2 years' experience of SENCo in a setting. (Essential)
Level 3 SENCO qualification (Desirable)


Accountable to:

Nursery Manager


The SENCO has responsibility for:

- ensuring liaison with parents and other professionals in respect of children with special educational needs (SEN) and disabilities.
- advising and supporting other practitioners in the setting
- ensuring that Personal Learning Plans are in place
- ensuring that relevant background information about individual children with special educational needs is collected, recorded and updated.


Main Duties:


  • To keep a profile of children with special educational needs and disabilities.
  • Early identification and support of children with SEND as appropriate on the special educational needs profile.
  • Ensure all practitioners in the setting understand their responsibilities to children with SEN and the setting's approach to identifying and meeting SEN
  • To liaise with settings and schools (reception) and especially during transition for the children to School.
  • To liaise with other professionals from outside services and external agencies e.g. Area SENCOs, Occupational therapists, Education Psychologists, CAMHS, Educational Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists, etc.
  • To arrange, organise and review support for individual children.
  • To keep Key Person's and Staff up to date with SEN and inclusion issues and to encourage personal development through courses and Nursery training days.
  • To meet with parents regularly in order to maintain good relationships, keep parents informed about their child's progress and that their insights inform action taken by the setting.
  • To take the lead in managing provision for children at early years action, early years action plus and for children with EHCP.
  • To respond to changes in legislation/practice from government and the Local Authority.
  • To organise and advice management on relevant training for staff.
  • To review individual children's PLPs termly as appropriate.
  • To review statements via annual and interim review meetings.
  • To meet at least termly with the Area SENCO.
  • To develop and share knowledge of resources (equipment, books. materials and knowledge of possible strategies.)
  • To be aware of the settings responsibilities according to the SEND Code of Practice and ensure these are incorporated in the daily practice
  • Following the graduated approach and implementing advice and strategies to improve children's outcomes
  • Liaise with professionals or agencies beyond the setting, and ensure advice given by professionals is incorporated into the setting planning
  • Complete all necessary paperwork in a timely and effective way
  • Organise and/or attend professional/parental meetings, including SEND Support plan meetings, transition meetings etc.
  • Continue continuous professional development through training and encourage staff to attend appropriate training
  • Ensure awareness of any changes to legislation regarding SEND.

Job Types:
Full-time, Part-time

Part-time hours: 30 per week


Salary:
£18,720.00-£27,000.00 per year
