Job summary:


  • The Department for International Trade (DIT) promotes British trade across the world, ensuring the UK takes advantage of the huge opportunities open to us. This secures and improves the economic wellbeing and stability of the UK. It also helps create tens of thousands of jobs every year. DIT sits at the heart of the UK's postEU future and is responsible for designing and implementing our future trading arrangements with other countries. The Trade Negotiations Group is responsible for negotiating with key partner countries and securing future Free Trade Agreements (FTA), which is a key priority for DIT.
  • As a negotiations strategy and policy senior advisor, you will play an important role within the Canada, Mexico and Greenland (CMG) Team in the Trans-Pacific Negotiations and Policy Directorate in the Trade Negotiations Group. CMG is a fun, friendly and inclusive team. We work together across country teams to deliver our collective objectives, recognising the value of joined up working and collaboration.
  • Our work is part of the wider UK Government effort to achieve the strategic trade objective of using our voice as a new independent trading nation to champion free trade, fight protectionism and remove barriers at every opportunity. As two major economies and members of Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), both Canada and Mexico are important partners for the UK.

Job description:


  • Take a lead role in shaping the future trading relationship with Canada. This will involve building a negotiating strategy as we progress negotiations on a new bilateral FTA, alongside the UK's accession to CPTPP to which Canada is also a member.
  • Build a deep understanding of the policy areas you lead on in the FTA, including UK and Canadian interests and challenges and wider policy considerations. Support negotiations in these areas.
  • Build crucial relationships with other Government Departments including Defra, BEIS and HMT, as well as FCDO colleagues in the UK embassies in Canada.
  • Work closely with policy and analytical colleagues in the Department to ensure that policy development appropriately considers UK interests in the broadest sense, including to reflect the UK's accession to the CPTPP.
  • Carry out and intelligently consume analysis on UK business interests, including liaising closely with the DIT Sector teams; play a leading role in stakeholder consultation, external communications and engagement work
  • Play an influential role in the leadership of the Canada and wider CMG team to contribute to a positive and inclusive working atmosphere for all. Being able to work in a flexible way to help us manage a changing and fastpaced policy environment
  • Concise and efficient drafting, including for internal and external Ministerial and Senior Official briefings, responding to external correspondence, parliamentary questions and committee letters; and manage engagement with Parliament and the Devolved Administrations.
  • Support planning and delivery of the negotiation rounds themselves, including in logistics and scheduling.

This is a superb opportunity to play a key role in helping to shape and drive the strategic direction of the UK's trade relationship with partner countries.

You will help to deliver practical trade goals for the UK.

You will need to work with others to find information, which you can then take into account to make considered judgements on what the best action is to take to establish the UK's trading future.

You will need to represent the UK in external facing meetings and to be able to engage senior opposite numbers in a foreign government.

You will receive appropriate training and guidance to fulfil these objectives. Some overseas travel can be expected.

  • You will have the ability to anticipate obstacles and have a 'can do' attitude to dealing with them.
  • You should be proactive in taking the team's policy goals forward and contribute to creating a positive team atmosphere.
  • We are looking for a team player who can be flexible and work independently with a wide range of stakeholders collaboratively.
