An exciting opportunity has arisen for two enthusiastic and motivated trainee physicians (ST4 or above) with an interest in leadership and management to join The Royal Free NHS Trust, Barnet Hospital as a chief registrar in either Acute Medicine or Geriatrics.


The chief registrar role provides senior higher specialty trainees with the opportunity to develop valuable skills in leadership and management, and gives them a minimum of 40% protected time to put these skills into practice by developing initiatives that address local challenges.

Chief registrars have a tangible impact on service improvement, workforce transformation, engagement and morale, and education and training, and work to deliver better outcomes for patients, colleagues and organisations.


Trainees benefit from a flexible training model that enables them to develop a portfolio of skills and experience that will benefit future consultant posts and leadership roles, and build a profile that marks them out as a future clinical leader.

Chief registrars receive support locally from a mentor/supervisor (Who will be a senior clinical leader) within the organisation, and nationally from the bespoke leadership and management development programme provided by the RCP.

The RCP leadership and management development programme commences in August/September 2018 and will involve some travel. The RCP cannot reimburse travel and accommodation expenses.


Applications are open to trainee physicians:

  • At ST4 or above
  • Working full time or lessthanfulltime
  • With a national training number
  • With full GMC registration.
This is a fixed-term role for minimum of 12 months. The role can be undertaken in programme or out of programme (training or experience).

The Post

The post is based at Barnet Hospital.


For part of their time, the Chief Registrar will be undertaking a project with a management focus and hopefully leading to quality improvement.


For the remainder of their time, duties include:

  • Working on one of the acute geriatric wards as part of the ward-based team of junior doctors. The ward is supported by daily consultant ward rounds (Mon-Fri) and the other juniors in the team include another SpR, 3/4 SHO's and an F trainee. Each ward has a comprehensive nursing and therapy team.
  • There is the opportunity to work in TREAT which aims to prevent admissions from A+E, facilitate early discharge and see direct referrals from GPs or via the navigator.
  • The postholder will have the opportunity to attend a broad spectrum of specialty clinics and also the various liaison services run by the department.
  • There are many opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, as well as an expectation to participate in audit and quality improvement. It is also expected that the post holder will be involved in the junior doctors forum and handover processes
  • The post holder will be on the General Medical oncall rota.
A mentoring scheme will be recommended to support the post holder
