Description

We are seeking an innovative, compassionate and enthusiastic Assistant Practitioner to join the newly established Macmillan prehabilitation team, based at Northampton General Hospital.

You must have good communication skills, show empathy and compassion and be able to take a holistic approach to providing patient care.


Following a successful bid to Macmillan, funding has been secured for 3 years to form a dedicated Prehabilitation/Rehabilitation Team to support patients who are preparing for and undergoing cancer treatment.

The service will provide proactive and preventative interventions including physical, nutritional and psychological interventions for patients to improve their clinical, functional and emotional outcomes as well as patient experience.

The service will start with cancer surgery in year one and extend to other systemic treatments in year two and beyond.

The post has fixed term funding for three years and is advertised for 37.5 hours per week.


The role would ideally suit someone with a support worker or exercise background, and/or an interest in working with people who are living with cancer.

To work under the direction of the Macmillan Prehabilitation/Rehabilitation Therapists, developing and implementing an effective Prehab/Rehab programme for cancer patients.


Participate in screening prior to cancer treatment, sign posting those with universal needs to the cancer You-Tube channel and the Macmillan Information and Support Centre, referring patients with specialist, targeted needs to the Macmillan Therapists.

Participate in group/individual sessions, delivering exercise programmes and other initiatives within an agreed framework.

To work under the direction of the Macmillan Therapists supporting the implementation of cancer prehabilitation/rehabilitation programmes across the organisation.


To communicate effectively with patients, healthcare professionals and other key stakeholders through mixed mediums including face to face, virtual telephone and written.

To screen patients prior to cancer treatment using recognised tools.

To confidently explain the purpose of cancer prehabilitation and rehabilitation programmes to patients/carers, answering any questions or concerns.

To contribute to the holistic needs assessment, identifying and addressing the non-complex prehabilitation/rehabilitation needs of patients.

Explore and discuss the wishes and goals of those living with cancer, developing and agreeing a plan of care.


To work autonomously, managing a caseload of patients requiring interventions, including the delivery of class-based exercise activities, one to one treatment sessions and the delivery of education through well being sessions.

Provide treatment planning, goal setting, monitoring, follow-up and re-assessment of patients on the programme.

Recognise signs and symptoms which may require registered therapist involvement or onward referral.

To encourage and motivate patients to engage with therapeutic interventions related to prehabilitation/rehabilitation.

To instruct patients in the safe and effective use of therapeutic equipment to facilitate functional independence.

To prepare and maintain safe, tidy treatment and class environment.

To be aware of the principles of safe handling of patients in accordance with Trust policy.

To promote skills development in activities of daily living.


To undertake nutritional screening of patients under the supervision of the Macmillan Prehabilitation Dietitian and identify patients at risk of malnutrition.
