Working in specialist laboratories, workshops, studios and digital facilities, our technical professionals play a key role supporting, guiding, and advising across our university from sciences, art, engineering, design, and technology, through to sports, nursing and teacher training.

  • Technical Manager Arts and Humanities Resource Centres
  • Technical Manager Manufacturing

Technical Services Lead - John Dalton Redevelopment


We are seeking an individual to underpin the Technical Services support for the Delivery of the Academic Vision Project (DAVP) and the redevelopment of the John Dalton site.

This is offered as a secondment opportunity.


Site Redevelopment
The redevelopment of the John Dalton site is the University's highest value capital project to date (£115m)


The project will deliver:

  • A new building (ca. 15,000 m2, equivalent in size to 2 football pitches);
  • Targeted refurbishment of existing spaces.

Academic Vision Project
The site redevelopment will act as a catalyst for modernisation and growth via the DAVP.


Key ambitions are outlined below:

  • Modernise and make a step change in STEM education through the development of pedagogy;
  • Realise significant REF performance improvements by increasing capacity and efficiency;
  • Increasing of PGT student numbers;
  • Building partnerships with high profile organisations;
  • Raise international presence by increasing international student numbers and creating worldclass facilities to attract internationallyleading researchers.


This role will play a leading part in developing both the Faculty and Technical Services vision for the Delivery of the Academic Vision Project (DAVP) and the redevelopment of the John Dalton site.


Key Duties

The key duties of the role are:

  • To oversee and coordinate all Technical Services aspects of the DAVP and the John Dalton site redevelopment;
  • To act as the deputy to the Superlab Workstream Lead;
  • To develop options appraisals documents covering key aspects of Technical Services activity e.g. operating model for the new Superlab;
  • To provide Technical Services representation on other key DAVP work streams, primarily: Educational change; Research spaces; Timetabling; Business as usual and working in new ways;
  • To engage with external organisations to identify, and where appropriate embed sector best practice.
