The starting salary for this role is £27,291 per annum, based on working 36-hours per week.


The Volunteer Coordinator for Tree Planting is a new role created to drive community and volunteer engagement in our tree planting initiative for Surrey.

You will be the community's direct contact to encourage tree planting, increasing biodiversity and encouragingcommunity participation from diverse groups, bringing our residents along on our journey to achieving our targets


About the role


As a
Volunteer Coordinator for tree planting within the Natural Capital team, you will be part of a pivotal element of the delivery of Surrey County Council's 1.2 million tree planting initiative and climate change agenda.

The role formsa critical interface between Surrey County Council, the county Boroughs/Districts within, and a range of stakeholders including members of the public, schools and diverse community groups.

The team work flexibly through a mix of office based, site and some home-based working.

You will be regularly required to visit potential planting sites throughout the County and liaise with residents, community groups, volunteers and council members andattend engagement events.


Please note that a full driving licence is essential for this role.

Your role responsibilities will include:


  • Organising, coordinating and attending volunteer tree planting days and engagement events
  • Collaborative crossteam working with colleagues across Surrey County Council as required
  • Writing communications out to a broad range of stakeholders on the project progress, to keep them engaged and involved in the work
  • Communicating with schools and community groups about their project progress, to keep them engaged and involved in the work and offer any support were needed
  • Identifying and contacting community groups to deliver tree planting and establishment projects
  • Coordinating the delivery of aftercare by residents and tree planting volunteers
  • Recruiting and briefing new and existing tree planting volunteers

About you:

The role requires the ability to work independently within a busy team, contributing towards our ambitious target.

You must be organised and able to prioritise your workload to deliver to often challenging deadlines and have a flexible and versatile attitude.

Your CV and personal statement will clearly evidence the following attributes, skills, and expertise:

  • A passion for both trees and Surrey's greener future
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to influence and negotiate with others?
  • Experience of working with the public (for example, schools, community partners and charities)
  • Experiencing working with or managing volunteers
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and plan your own workload

This is a 12-month secondment / fixed term contract.
