Independent Living Service Technical Officer - Grade J

About the role.
An opportunity has arisen for a Technical Officer in the Independent Living Service (ILS).

The service is responsible for the delivery of adaptations to the residents of Gateshead, to help them live independently at home.

The ILS Technical Officer will provide technical services across all tenures including Council and private properties.

Working in the Independent Living Service they will work closely in a multi-disciplinary team with The ILS Manager, The Senior Technical Officer, Home Improvement Officers, Occupational Therapists, Design Consultants and Contractors.


The post holder will conduct site assessments and prepare reports, drawings and specifications, liaise with contractors, ensure compliance with building safety laws and assist with budget planning and cost estimates for projects.

You must have knowledge and experience of

  • A strong technical aptitude and understanding of legislation and codes of practice relating to planning, building regulations and the requirements that control how works are carried out,
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills,
  • An ability to work in a team and manage multiple tasks simultaneously,
  • Proficiency in relevant software (e.g, Microsoft Office, CAD and project management tools) and,
  • Attention to detail and problem solving skills.
  • Experience in a similar role, such as an independent living service, construction related project management or contract administration where you have undertaken surveys, inspections and produced drawings, specifications and costings and,
  • Knowledge of relevant local and national legislation and guidelines.

You must have the following qualifications.

  • You must also have a degree or equivalent qualification in a Design, Surveying, Architecture or Construction related field or equivalent experience of working within a design, surveying, or construction related field and,
  • A full driving license or access to mobility support.
