Executive Producer, The Headlines


The New York Times Audio team is seeking an Executive Producer for "The Headlines," a daily news show for Times subscribers.

This person will manage an international team of producers and audio editors who use the journalistic rigor and power of The Times' unique reporting to deliver the top stories through distinct writing and a sound-rich, audio experience.


The Executive Producer will help set the long-term editorial vision and priorities of the show as well as develop and manage relationships with newsroom editors and reporters, the Audio app programming and product teams and audio leadership.

Because this role will also be key in supporting and developing The Headlines staff, it will be essential for the Executive Producer to have strong cultural competency and an ability to engage in rigorous and compassionate conversations about our work and professional development.


Main Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the editorial vision and establish coverage priorities across multiple time zones.
  • Drive production of episodes, including overseeing scripting, tape selection and editing the episode
  • Responds to breaking and evolving news with a sense of urgency and accuracy
  • Ensures stories have logical sequencing and structure
  • Anticipate challenges in stories and proactively solve for them as well as identify creative solutions when a story/the writing isn't working.
  • Ensure a diversity of coverage throughout the year.
  • Deliver thoughtful feedback to editors, host and producers on deadline.
  • Be a thoughtful and empathetic leader of people and process, train and inspire young journalists.
  • Drive recruiting and staffing needs, cultivating ongoing relationships with essential and emerging talent.
  • Oversee and continually improve production systems and resources of the team, including how we staff episodes, manage closing rotations for producers and editors and nimbly adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Build ties with the core newsroom, including deskheads and editors.
  • Be the key point of contact for NYT stakeholders as it relates to The Headlines, including The Daily, the Audio app, HR, marketing and communications.
  • Uphold highest editorial standards of quality for Times journalism
  • Exercises calm under extreme pressure.

Qualifications:


  • Extensive production and editing experience in audio journalism, including in a management role of a large team.
  • Expertise in and passion for news and for audio narratives
  • Fluency in audio editing software, ProTools preferred
  • Dedication to a culture of feedback both delivering and receiving; from professional development feedback down to structural and specific notes in episodes.
  • An eagerness to create the best work possible
  • Willingness and ability to use data to inform decisions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Welldeveloped and adaptive cultural competence and emotional intelligence
  • Experience in a deadlinedriven environment
  • Belief in The New York Times' mission
