An exciting opportunity has arisen to be part of Sherwood Forest Hospitals Medical Examiner Service.

We are looking for someone who is inquisitive and keen to be a part of the Medical Examiners team, aiding them in their responsibility for overseeing the death certification for all deaths in both acute and community settings.


This is a challenging role which combines some clinical knowledge, skilled communication in sensitive areas (including with bereaved families) and IT skills in developing and maintaining the medical examiner database both locally and nationally.


You will work alongside the Medical Examiners and other services managing care after death to provide a streamlined service supporting the bereaved.

Main duties of the job

  • To participate in the processes of death certification and referrals to the Coroner.
  • Ensure robust and timely medical examiner reviews and liaise between the mortuary, clinical teams and duty ME.
  • To support the Medical Examiners Service in maintaining proposals from and in line with the Department of Health.
  • To assist in highlighting cases for review by the Structured Judgement Review team (SJR), the Child Death Overview Panel (CDOP), Clinical Governance teams and the Learning Disability Review team (LeDeR).
  • Consideration of Occupational Exposures and use of the Cause of Death List is essential.

Purpose of Post:

To support Medical Examiners in their role in scrutinising the circumstances and causes of death.

To be a point of contact and source of advice for relatives of deceased patients, healthcare professionals, Coroner and Registration Services.

Duties/Responsibilities of the role


To act as an intermediary between the bereaved and clinicians to establish and resolve any concerns relating to a patients death.


Work with Medical Examiners to aid them in their responsibility for overseeing the death certification process for all deceased patients in the organisation.


To maintain a constant presence in the Medical Examiner office as point of contact between service user and the medical examiners.


To ensure all relevant information for each case is entered on the database and to assist the Lead Medical Examiner Officer & Lead Medical Examiner in providing the National Medical Examiner Service with quarterly data and activity report including financial data.


To establish the circumstances of individual patient deaths by performing a preliminary review of medical records to identify clinical and circumstantial information, sourcing additional details where required, for scrutiny by the Medical Examiner.

To work together with the Lead MEO & Lead ME to develop the service expanding into the community.


Maintain an awareness of the diverse needs of users of the medical examiner system to ensure equality to any particular group defined by sex, race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender reassignment or disability.


Knowledge, skills and experience required:


Educated to Batchelors degree level, or evidence of study/equivalent practical experience at an advanced level; this might include nursing and/or other clinical experience.


  • To work as an independent intermediary for the Bereaved to establish and resolve any concerns they may have in relation to a death, and to escalate their concerns appropriately to medical teams, Patient Experience Team or HM Coroners.
  • Develop strong links and knowledge of the legal system and cultural approaches to death.
  • Responsible for maintaining the database and sharing information with the National Medical Examiner Team on a quarterly basis.
  • You will have a strategic and operational role in developing the current medical examiner service towards the statutory service and in the roll out to the community


To have completed the core 26 Medical Examiner e-learning modules developed by the Royal Society of Pathologists and the one-day face to face Medical Examiner Officer Training.


To have qualifications/skills in day-to-day operational/process management of a customer-facing service where users may have unpredictable and emotionally charged needs.
