All organisations providing services to children must ensure that those who work or volunteer with children and young people are safe and competent to do so.


Equally, anyone that encounters children or young people in their work has a duty of care to promote and safeguard their wellbeing.


Most people who work with children and young people act professionally and aim to promote the best outcomes for the children they work with, however at times the behaviour of staff can lead to harm or abuse and give rise to allegations being made against them.


The Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) has a lead responsibility on all matters pertaining to establishing and improving the structures and processes in relation to allegations made against those that work and volunteer with children.

Specific responsibilities regarding Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) (Allegations Management) include coordinating the local authority's response by ensuring that the team:

  • Is involved in the management and oversight of individual cases, making initial threshold decisions and monitoring cases to ensure that they are dealt with as quickly as possible, consistent with a fair and thorough process.
  • Provides advice and guidance to employers, voluntary organisations and community groups.
  • Works collaboratively with partner agencies in promoting and developing good practice for the safeguarding and protection of children and young people.

Experience and Skills

Key Skills:


  • Ability to make sound pragmatic problemsolving decisions, which will have a wider service impact. The ability to provide comprehensive professional advice and support within the service specialism, including tackling difficult problems of a technical, professional, resource or people related nature.
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to influence actions by others and negotiate effective business solutions, appropriately challenging decision making and outcomes where appropriate.
  • Ability to provide comprehensive professional advice and support within the service specialism.
  • Ability to analyse and make judgements based on understanding of principles.
  • Ability to challenge existing practices and identify innovative solutions within the required framework.
  • Ability to set timescales and review effectiveness of service delivery.

Qualifications and/or experience:


  • Qualified social worker and registered with Social Work England.
  • Extensive safeguarding / child protection practice experience within statutory agency setting.
  • Experience of successfully working in partnership and networking with a range of other professionals.
  • Demonstrable experience of balancing competing demands from the public, staff and other agencies.
  • Experience of being involved in multiagency responses to safeguarding children.
  • Experience of managing / leading staff.
  • Experience of leading historical allegations including where the alleged is not still working with children or in contact with children
  • Experience of managing a small budget and/or contributing to financially related decisions on larger spends
