The physical activity Navigator will deliver an important programme to increase levels of physical activity among people with severe mental illness and their carers; supporting people to improve their physical health and quality of life. The role will field based with admin duties being home based. This role will be actively engaging Bedfordshire community.

We do not require a qualified professional for this role - you will need to demonstrate relevant experience during the interview.


You will proactivity engage with our service users and carers to assess physical health needs and coproduce a wide range of activities that will improve wellbeing, reduce loneliness and isolation and increase physical activity amongst those most in need but are hard to reach and may be lacking in motivation and self-confidence.


You will work with Rethink Mental Illness peer support groups using our physical health check tool which will support them to increase physical activity amongst attendees.

This will deliver sustainable behaviour change that is continuously evaluated with learnings fed back into further development of the programme.


You will develop an expert steering group of people with lived experience, professionals, stakeholder organisations and others, and work with them to coproduce and oversee the piloting and delivery of initiatives to increase physical activity amongst those you need it most.

Key learnings will also be shared between stakeholder charities and in particular our funders.

You will work with the following people and teams

  • External people with lived experience, peer support groups, communitybased organisations, other regional and national partners.
  • Local businesses and organisations that can support the delivery and implementation of activities

What I do and achieve

  • I will support service users with their physical health through 121 tailored support.
  • I will work with Rethinks existing services in the 5 Boroughs of London by assessing the physical health needs of service users and carers
  • I will develop an indepth understanding of the physical activity and mental health community support landscape in each place, including identifying the key stakeholders in delivery and influencing.
  • I will develop area specific physical activity signposting tools and support service users access exercise services within their local communities
  • I will work in partnership with people with lived experience.
  • I will continue to develop an understanding of the barriers to people with lived experience undertaking physical activity, including within support groups.
  • I will identify solutions to these barriers, including coproducing a toolkit for support groups to identify ways to increase physical activity.
  • I will establish a clear baseline of current levels of physical activity within support groups.
  • I will identify opportunities to deliver initiatives that increase physical activity and physical health
  • I will work closely with the Involvement team to develop and deliver these initiatives with peer support groups.
  • Develop relationships with a range of stakeholders across the clinical, community, voluntary and physical activity sector including the Active Partnership, London Sport.

  • I have the ability to make a comprehensive assessment of an individual's situation and needs; to develop, implement and review risk management plans and devise support plans to meet these needs.
  • I am flexible with my work and am able to use my own transport to travel regionally for business purposes
  • I have the ability to develop good therapeutic relationships with clients and practice in a nondiscriminatory manner, respecting the beliefs and cultural practices of individuals and groups.
  • I operate at all times from an inclusive values base which promotes recovery and recognises and respects diversity.
  • Experience of using clinical outcome measures to inform practice.
  • I am a confident communicator with excellent verbal and written skills.
  • I have working knowledge of standard IT packages including Microsoft Word, Excel and use of database / information systems.
  • Ability to use clinical supervision and personal development positively and be selfreflective in own personal and professional development.
  • Experience of working with service users and a variety of internal and external stakeholders to develop and deliver creative initiatives to change behaviours.
  • I work proactively and collaboratively with colleagues, partners and other stakeholders to achieve outcomes and impacts.
  • I am resilient and able to work flexibly and dynamically to meet the demands of the project and manage
