This post will be responsible for managing the operations of a secure research facility (Lab) within the Security, Crime and Intelligence Innovation Institute (SCIII).

The Facilities Officer will manage all operational aspects of Lab, including:

providing advice and support to users of the facility; administrative tasks associated with operational delivery of the facilities; and management of equipment and infrastructure.

The postholder will be the main point of contact for both internal and external contacts for all matters relating to the Lab facility, escalating to the University Innovation Institute (UII) Manager where appropriate.


  • This post is fulltime (35 hours per week), and fixed term until 31st July 2026.

Key Duties

  • Provide professional advice and guidance on processes and procedures relating to the LAB to internal and external customers, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action where appropriate, and ensuring complex and conceptual issues are understood.
  • Support the Security Controller to manage all aspects of security, risk assessment and mitigation of the facility, in accordance with externally set standards.
  • Ensure that the provision of high security operations is delivered to the institution, proactively changing the delivery according to customer requirements.
  • Establish and work with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University's Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required.
  • Develop and deliver training relating to various aspects of access and use of the Lab.
  • Instruct and guide other employees across the University in relation to the Lab facilities as required.
  • Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the department including administering access controls, greeting and escorting all internal and external visitors following security protocols, escorting internal members and external contractors to carry out maintenance work or similar.
  • Liaise with SPARK building support teams to keep up to date with current and emerging building issues and to report the same for the Lab
  • Create and manage an internal user booking system for both internal and external visitors visiting the Lab.
  • Act as the Lab Health and Safety officer, maintaining a detailed knowledge of safety legislation associated with requirements of the Institute in addition to the University's administrative regulations and procedures.
  • Liaise with staff to maintain and support research facilities and equipment.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

  • Degree/NVQ 4 or equivalent Professional membership/experience

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience of working within a high security operational environment or a busy research facility
  • Able to demonstrate professional knowledge within estate and facilities management to give advice and guidance to internal and external customers.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and associated software and the ability to set up standard office systems and procedures and make improvements as appropriate.

Customer Service, Communication and Team Working

  • Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people.
  • Evidence of ability to explore customers' needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered.
  • Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances within high security operations.

Planning, Analysis and Problem solving

  • Evidence of ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identifying and proposing practical solutions and resolving problems with range of potential outcomes.
