We are looking to recruit an Industrial Plant Inspector to join our team at Sparrows in Southampton.


The main purpose of the role is to carry out high quality inspections ensuring various plant, machinery and equipment is compliant with current regulatory and statutory requirements.

You will operate within agreed authorities, inspection and HSEQ standards with a clear customer focus and drive to achieve optimal service delivery.

You will be working in a busy and varied client focused environment and will be expected to be customer focused and professional at all times.


All persons conducting work for Sparrows Inspection Services are to be aware that they are free from any commercial, financial, and other pressures which might influence their judgement, impartiality, independence, and integrity and should formally report any undue pressures applied to them during the inspection to Sparrows senior management as detailed on the Inspection Bodies (IBs) Organisation Chart.

Main responsibilities

  • Carry out inspection activities within the Sparrows scope, type, and range of inspections, in accordance with company procedures and statutory requirements.
  • To produce and deliver inspection reports using Sparrows Connect best in class inspection reporting software.
  • Operate Sparrows documented procedures and Connect database in a proficient manner.
  • To keep abreast of changes in relevant standards, legislation, and internal procedures, acting as an advisor to highprofile clients.
  • To deliver customer excellence, operating in the professional, friendly, and authoritative manner expected of all clientfacing Sparrows lifting equipment examiners.
  • Work alone and as part of a team in a safe, efficient, and effective manner safe working practices shall be carried out in accordance with Sparrows documented procedures, HSEQ protocols and client site safety requirements.
  • Undertake taskbased risk assessments, operate within the confines of client safe systems of work, deliver toolbox talks to the work party, and ensure all members of the team fully understand their roles and responsibilities.
HSEQ responsibilities

  • It is mandatory that the incumbent is familiar with the Company's HSEQ Policy and takes an active role in the compliance and improvement of Sparrows Integrated Management System. The incumbent must report any incidents, near misses, actual or potential problems with products, services or systems to their Line Manager.
  • The incumbent also has legal responsibilities under countryspecific health and safety legislation to follow all Company processes and procedures and familiarise themselves with the emergency response arrangements applicable to them. The incumbent is also responsible for the health and safety arrangements of subordinates (if any) and for any persons visiting them while on the Company premises.
Qualifications and experience

  • Verified experience in NDT Inspections
  • Magnetic Particle Inspection Level 2 (essential)
  • Liquid Penetrant Inspection Level 2 (desirable)
  • Ultrasonics Level 2 (Plate Tester) (essential)
  • Eddy Current Inspection Level 2 (desirable)
  • Ultrasonics Level desirable)
  • Ultrasonics Level desirable)
  • Lead Drilling Tool / Equipment Inspection
  • Lead Subsea Tool / Equipment Inspection

Necessary Attributes:


  • Good communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Visio etc.).
  • Physical capability to undertake inspection activities.
  • Visual acuity.
  • Ability to work alone and in teams.
  • Ability to deal with difficult clients.
  • Ability to detect defects within their capability, competence, and authority.
  • Ability to evaluate defects, knowledge of types of defects, defect acceptance criteria, and knowledge of failure modes.
  • Making decisions within the limits of own competence acceptability of defects fitness for purpose.
  • Maturity to seek advice and technical support, as required.
