Description

Through strong leadership and effective management, the Lead Midwife for Education and Training will support their team to promote and deliver excellence, while maintaining and continually improving clinical standards evidenced by achievement of key quality performance indicators and national drivers.

The Lead Midwifes key responsibility will be to ensure that the required compliance regarding training standards are met within the key areas set out in the Maternity Incentive Scheme and also that national recommendations from the Ockenden report and the Maternity and Neonatal three year plan are met.

This will be achieved through high visibility, accessibility, and surveillance and taking a multidisciplinary approach to education and training.

The post holder must demonstrate clinical expertise, competency in practice and behave as a role model in line with the Trust values.


Supporting the Director of Midwifery and Head of Midwifery in achieving these National Targets, the post holder will promote evidence-based learning and will lead their team in implementing and teaching and multi-disciplinary training to support the Maternity Transformation Programme and full implementation of Maternity Core Competency Framework Version 2.

They will be responsible for supporting and developing the maternity education department and will lead, promote, and facilitate a safe and positive learning environment and culture for all maternity staff groups.

They will identify any gaps in the provision of education and training and be instrumental in the development and implementation of new and responsive education programmes, ensuring local and national service objectives are included within the local maternity education strategy.

The post holder will report and represent the Trust and foster strong links to influence the midwifery education agenda at all levels.


The post holder will work closely with the Patient Safety Lead Midwife to embed and sustain learning arising from governance and assurance processes, taking the lead for evidence based guidelines.

They will link with Maternity and Neonatal Voices partnership and other patient groups to ensure that the families voice is at the heart of education programmes.

They will line manage various teams including; Professional Midwifery Advocates, Practice Development Midwives, Fetal Monitoring Midwives, Digital Midwives, Recruitment and Retention, Bereavement Midwives and International Recruitment Teams.


Other responsibilities include:

  • Advise and support the Perinatal Lead Governance and Quality / Director of Midwifery / Head of Midwifery on education and training issues and provide professional leadership for staff groups through the development and delivery of education programmes for the perinatal team.
  • Ensure the provision of education meets the needs of the Maternity service to provide the right level of competent practitioners delivering safe, evidencebased care.
  • To work alongside multi professional teams within the Trust and the wider healthcare community to support and develop opportunities for shared learning wherever appropriate.
  • Lead the development of clinically effective practice across the Trust by providing support and facilitation to colleagues at all levels, working closely with neonatal, obstetric and anaesthetic colleagues to promote MDT Training.
  • Oversee, support and participate as appropriate in the delivery of training programmes including PROMPT, Fetal Surveillance and Neonatal Life Support for the wider multidisciplinary team and provide the requested data to evidence compliance
  • To ensure performance standards are met and support matrons to take the necessary action if not.
  • To provide guidance, support and effective clinical leadership for not only the education team but for all staff undertaking training within maternity services, taking a share of responsibility for standards of clinical practice and help create an environment where excellent clinical care is promoted.
  • To work with the Lead Midwife Patient Safety and Quality supporting learning from incidents using a range of methods
  • Support Recruitment and Retention of staff as part of the Senior Midwifery Leadership Team with a focus on supporting retention of staff who have training/developmental needs
  • Oversee the preceptorship programmes/Maternity Support worker framework within maternity services to further develop the multiprofessional workforce.
  • Where relevant to the education team, to investigate complaints, incidences, grievances, performance issues, developing action plans and make recommendations as required.
  • To ensure the training provided is in line with local, regional and national standards including involvement of perinatal team
  • Take responsibility for ensuring any metrics such as training compliance are achieved and sustained through appropriate monitoring and reporting processes.
