Job description for Commercial Officer
We're seeking Commercial Officers to join our team based at Lincoln.

These specific vacancies are within a combined team which covers Typhoon In Service Support Team (TyTAN) and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF).


TyTAN is a multi-billion pound International contract which provides the in service support for the Typhoon aircraft and the continued support of the airworthiness of the Typhoon Fleet.

The contract is a National and International Contract which is part of a NETMA 4 Nation Contract between the Eurofighter partners.


BBMF involves supporting and maintaining the Contracts for the priceless artefacts of our National Heritage within this collection in airworthiness condition.


The role of the Commercial Officer is to liaise and support key relationships with stakeholders, project managers and individual contractors, through conducting effective conversations and meetings, whilst continuously maintaining strong relationships with all parties.

It offers the opportunity to play a significant part in the relationship management of multiple contractors as a Commercial Officer.

You will demonstrate the ability to work autonomously, as well as part of a team. The commercial function provides independent professional judgement on commercial and procurement business matters.

It is made up of professionals specialising in:
compliance with public procurement regulations; competition; tendering and contracting; and commercial risk.

Responsibilities for Commercial Officer
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Negotiate terms and pricing, placing of contracts and negotiating contract amendments up to a maximum delegation of £2.5M in accordance with the Ministry of Defence policy
  • Support the development of new Procurement Strategies through analysis of the markets for Defence Equipment and 'learning from experience' with other teams in DE&S and using DE&S acquisition tools to advertise defence procurements to future suppliers
  • Develop Invitation to Tender documentation and issue to bidders
  • Manage contracts and contract amendments up to a maximum delegation of £2.5M in accordance with the Ministry of Defence policy
  • Conduct supplier performance management in accordance with Contract Management Plans
  • Conduct due diligence of commercial activity within own area of responsibility in order to provide confidence in commercial outcomes
  • Contribute to wider Commercial function and business improvement activities
  • Communicate in a timely manner with a range of internal and external stakeholders
If successful you will be supported to undertake the following:

  • Relevant study with the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) to achieve Level 4 qualification, if not already held. This will be funded by DE&S / SDA
  • Practitionerlevel accreditation panel to demonstrate Government Commercial Function (GCF) professional standard
  • Leadership development and defence commercial professionalism courses to develop commercial skills and ensure ongoing Continuing Professional Development

Person specification

  • Experience in drafting invitation to tender documentation
  • Experience in tender evaluation, negotiation and placement of contracts
  • Experience communicating with internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience in effective contract management to ensure delivery of requirements including arranging required contract amendments
It would also be great if you can demonstrate any of the following desirable criteria:

  • Hold a CIPS Level 4 Foundation Diploma.
  • An understanding of managing Risk in Contract Management
  • Experience of managing and supporting people
