Askham Bryan College is a specialist land-based college based across the North of England with centres in York, Middlesbrough, Saltaire, Wakefield and Newcastle.


We offer a wide-ranging curriculum to our Further Education students, including Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Management, Countryside and the Environment, Engineering, Equine, Floristry, Motorsport, Outdoor Adventure Sport, Sports Development, Coaching and Fitness, Uniformed Public Services and Veterinary Nursing.

We are currently recruiting for an experienced and passionate Learning Support Practitioner for our Saltaire campus.

To provide additional learning support and individual support for students who have high needs and SEND, to enable them to enjoy a fully inclusive college experience and to achieve and progress.


We would expect applicants to have an understanding and experience of some of the following Special Educational Needs - Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, social, emotional difficulties, speech, language and communication difficulties, dyspraxia and moderate to severe general learning difficulties.

Main Purpose of the role:

Learning Support Practitioners provide pro-active in-class support to students with learning difficulties and maintain high quality records of that support in line with identified needs and support strategies.


Key Tasks / responsibilities:

All tasks to be carried out in a consistent manner with the corporation's culture.

  • To assimilate relevant information pertaining to their assigned students' needs and support requirements, e.g. summary of EHCP content
  • To engage students in accessing and achieving their learning goals
  • To work with, and assist, teaching staff in the planning and delivery of sessions
  • To facilitate student integration into mainstream learning and enrichment activities
  • To provide assistance and supervisory support and, where necessary, mediate social difficulties at break and meal times
  • To accompany students on residential, day trip or work experience as required
  • To be available to support other students in the classroom or College as required
  • To record their daily interventions and support with students via the College's electronic recording system, ProMonitor
  • To read, scribe or record instances of students needing extra time to complete work to evidence normal way of working for exam access arrangements
  • To support students in exams by providing the exam access arrangements they have in place
  • To work in the College setting to ensure that all policies and procedures are complied with
