Editorial is a key department at Union integral to the success of the company and is often fast-paced especially during the final delivery of a project.

The Data IO/Data Ops Technician (DOT) is a very important role in the Editorial team that requires strong organisational and technical skills, the ability to multi-task and find solutions.

They will be passionate about VFX, have a keen eye, a calm approach and proven customer service and communication skills.


The DOT works most closely with Editorial, Production and Systems to provide prompt and secure handling of encrypted and multi-formatted data to and from our internal network and ensure it meets all quality control and deadline requirements.

They must be a proactive self-starter who can quickly assess workload, determine priorities and identify areas where they may be able to support the Editorial team to meet all Editorial requirements.


Knowledge of post-production workflows, pipeline and various packages such as Linux, Hiero, Shotgun, Excel are needed along with excellent attention to detail to ensure that all tasks in the Editorial team run smoothly.

A good knowledge of media file formats and a basic knowledge of film cameras, recording formats and aspect ratio is important.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Provide prompt and secure handling of encrypted and multiformatted data to and from our internal network
  • Publish scans into the Union pipeline
  • Connect to external transfer systems to transfer media
  • Troubleshoot connection issues with external transfers and communicate with the Technology department to escalate connection, software or hardware issues
  • Log and track all materials, communicating with production teams with regard to outgoing and incoming media
  • Perform validation and QC checks on incoming and outgoing materials
  • Proactively identify areas/methods to help streamline media ingest/egest within the facility
  • Process, index and archive onset material shot by supervisors
  • Manage an LTO based archiving system to ensure media is archived and restored according to project and storage requirements
  • Monitor and assess storage and usage, alerting relevant departments of unusual activity or space considerations
  • Actively monitor media age to assess best location for its storage
  • Liaise with Production dept. on project storage requirements
  • Liaise with project artists after show delivery to create master archives
  • Update Editorial Tracker on assigned tasks and ensure the Editorial team are aware of priorities
  • Review and manage Editorial Tracker in absence of Editorial Coordinator
  • Assist wider editorial team when required to meet deadlines
  • Have a good understanding of Union security protocols to ensure we maintain our security accreditations
