Job Purpose
CTS are committed to providing high quality teaching and learning to all our learners on programmes. Our programmes are designed to overcome individual barriers to learning and support individuals into further education, employment or training.

The role of the Vocational Skills Tutor is to deliver high quality and innovative sessions that engage learners and meet their individual needs.

The learners on our programmes often enrol with multiple barriers to education, employment and training, therefore the role requires an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to inspire and challenge learners to help them to achieve and progress.

The role also entails providing clear advice and support to ensure learners get the best from their time at CTS Training.

This will include sign-posting learners to the most appropriate sources of help and guidance where appropriate.


Being able to motivate and energise learners, deliver a well-designed curriculum that leads to high achievement rates, and agree SMART targets during the learner review process.

The Vocational Skills Tutor will also provide effective CEIAG and support learners towards their next steps and progression routes.


Key Performance Indicators

  • 100% accurate and timely submission of ILP's, reviews and ILPE's.
  • 90% of learners become eligible and all early leavers are contacted to reengage in line with CTS Attendance and Withdrawal Policy.
  • Any 'at risk learners' to be managed effectively from day one to ensure they attend and progress.
  • Minimum 80% achievement rate across all qualifications.
  • Minimum 85% attendance across all sessions.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Enrolment and Induction

  • Carry out tasks as allocated during the start of each contract year, including the enrolment of new learners throughout the year.
  • Contribute towards the planning and delivery of the Induction programme.
  • Take learners through key policies e.g. learner handbook, esafety Policy, Health and Safety, Safeguarding and Prevent etc.
  • Carry out effective assessments of learners Vocational Skills to be able to accurately identify starting points and plan effective and meaningful programmes.
  • Ensure effective CIEAG is carried out and use information obtained at enrolment/induction to ensure that learner's programmes are planned to meet their needs.
  • Agree individual learning plans that meet the needs of learners and support them to move closer to the labour market.

Teaching Learning and Assessment

  • Manage the delivery of the programme curriculum by developing a robust scheme of work and innovative session plans.
  • Plan and deliver engaging lessons for diverse groups or individuals in a safe and inclusive environment.
  • Be proactive in continuously updating own skills and knowledge and identify any training and development needs.
  • Provide rigorous assessment and effective developmental feedback to learners via robust marking of learners work and structured verbal and written feedback.
  • Consistently deliver good/outstanding teaching and learning to ensure a high quality learner experience and excellent achievement rates.
  • Keep group profiles up to date at all times and use this information to plan sessions that meet the needs of all learners.
  • Value and promote social and cultural diversity, equality and diversity and inclusion. Promote British Values and integrate effectively across schemes of work.
  • Manage and promote positive learner behaviour in line with CTS Behaviour and Positive Engagement Policy.
  • Complete daily, accurate electronic attendance records and ensure CTS attendance and withdrawal process is adhered to at all times. Contact learners and take an active role in ensuring learners attend programme.
  • Take an active part in the sharing of ideas and good practice within the tutor team.
  • Ensure English and Maths are effectively embedded into the curriculum.
  • Support learners with their career and progression planning and advise them on how to access guidance on making informed choices.
  • Adhere to CTS policies and procedures and awarding body standards at all times.
  • Support the exam and invigilation process as required.
  • Attend team meetings and 1:1 meetings as required.
  • Obtain learner views of the programmes in line with the quality systems at CTS Training e.g. learner voice focus groups, learner surveys etc.
  • To celebrate learner achievement and promote a positive culture at all times.

Individual learner progress reviews and action planning

  • Ensure contractual targets and internal business goals are achieved and that awarding body requirements are adhered at all times.
  • To provide accurate and timely formative assessment and feedback to learners, and maintain assessment records, including tracking and reporting of learner progress in line with CTS policy.
