This is a very important post to the school with a small site to manage.

The role requires someone with flexibility, good organisational skills and initiative, who is able to work as part of a team and with a good sense of humour You will have good practical skills and a keen awareness of safe working practices.

You will need to be able to work independently, as well as communicate effectively with members of the school community, and take responsibility for the school site, keeping the building safe, secure and clean.

You must be willing to attend training to develop and update your knowledge and skills.


The role includes the following:

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Supporting the safe and efficient running of the school
  • Responsibility for site security, including opening and closing of the school, as well as outside of normal school hours for school events if required
  • Ensure that the school is open for staff and pupils each school day
  • Ensure that all doors and windows are secured and all lights and heaters are switched off after use
  • Take reasonable steps to deter trespass on school premises and unauthorised parking of vehicles.
  • Carry out necessary duties incurred with alarm systems, extinguishers, emergency lighting etc.
  • Undertake the responsibility of key holder.
  • As a key holder, attending emergency callouts where necessary
  • Ensure that the school is up to the required temperature by 9am each school day.
  • Manually shut down heating and switch off fanheaters etc at any time when not required.
  • Check for correct setting of room thermostats, thermostatic radiator valves and fan convector thermostats.
  • Keep boilers clean as per instructions and keep boilerhouse clean and tidy and undertake regular checks.
  • Ensure that no flammable materials are stored in the boilerhouse
  • Ensure that the whole school is cleaned using approved and appropriate materials, carrying out cleaning work in designated areas, where applicable
  • Keep a check on cleaning materials and submit purchase orders to the office in time to avoid shortages.
  • Undertake the inspection of toilets, showers etc and replenish soap and toilet paper as required.
  • Ensure that the playground, paths and all hard areas are kept clean and tidy of leaves, litter etc and all drains and gullies are kept clear and free flowing.
  • Undertake grounds work as required
  • Ensure that the environment is clear of hazardous materials/equipment.
  • Monitoring the highest standards of cleanliness throughout the school, undertaking adhoc cleaning tasks as required and liaising with and supervising the cleaning staff
  • Take delivery and store materials, making arrangements for storing them and undertake general porterage duties.
  • Ensure that all caretaking equipment is clean and in good working order and that caretakers/cleaners' storage cupboards are clean and tidy.
  • Contact the Business Manager for advice if the work of any cleaning staff or contractor is not up to standard
  • Provide access to the school in the event of snow or minor flooding.
  • Draw attention of the Business Manager to any repairs and maintenance work required.
  • Carry out handyperson duties wherever possible to avoid calling in contractors
  • Be aware of and adhere to all health and safety procedures. Fulfil the health and safety monitoring procedures that form part of the school's health and safety policy and compliance procedures
  • Attend all essential health and safety training courses as determined by the Business Manager/Principal
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times in respect of schoolrelated matters and to prevent disclosure of confidential and sensitive information.
  • Respond to out of hours call outs for alarms as required
  • Undertake any other duties of a similar level and responsibility as may be required from time to time at either of the school site
  • Regular checking and record keeping in relation to Health and Safety procedures, including fire safety, COSHH, legionella etc.
  • Undertaking general DIY and repairs to the school, property and premises
  • Liaising with other departments and contractors and managing programmes of planned and preventative maintenance

£23,881.00-£25,219.00 per year
