Responsible to:
Matron (reports to Nurse in charge)


Objective:


As part of the caring team, to help create and maintain a healthy and safe environment where the personal needs of the Residents are met under the direction and supervision of the Nurse in Charge.

Offering continuity of care and ensuring residents physical, social, cultural and spiritual needs are met. Demonstrating respect for the individuals dignity and independence at all times


PRINCIPAL ELEMENTS OF THE ROLE:


CARE:
Provision of care in accordance with agreed care plans: To include but not limited to

  • Nutritional intake
- assisting residents with meals and fluids, ensuring individual residents nutritional and fluid intake is of a satisfactory level and to report any changes in intake to the nurse in charge

  • Prevention of pressure sores
  • Mouth care as directed by the Nurse in Charge
- to ensure residents teeth and/or dentures are cleaned at least twice daily. To report any changes in mouth condition to the Nurse in Charge. To provides extra mouth care to those residents with palliative requirements as directed by the Nurse in Charge

  • Assisting residents with Personal Hygiene
- shaving, bathing, showering, washing, bed bath, drying/brushing/styling hair, clothing etc. To ensure each residents dignity and privacy is maintained and encompass individual choice and likes. Provide extra touches that residents like such as jewellery, perfume, aftershaves etc

  • Ensure bedrooms and communal areas are maintained to a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene and that wardrobes and drawers are kept tidy. Ensure that wardrobes and drawers are restocked with any required equipment to provide high quality care to each resident such as incontinence products, gloves, aprons etc
  • Ensure personal protective equipment is worn at all times during caring interventions with residents to ensure infection control risks are minimised. Use appropriate laundry bags depending on infection requirements. Be aware of health and safety requirements regarding laundry and yellow bags.
  • Catheter Care
- ensure catheter care is maintained to a high standard, using stands when residents are in bed for infection control reasons, ensure night bags and day bags are changed according to manufacturing instructions and as directed by the Nurse in Charge, reporting any concerns to the nurse in charge

  • Care assistants with NVQ3 to utilise extra training to be able to carry out clinical observations such as temp, pulse, o2, BP
  • Clothing
- ensure residents wear only their own clothes and are given choice to what they wear. Ensure that clothes are numbered with the corresponding residents room number and that incontinence wear is for individual use only so should be room numbered also.

  • Ensure all care interventions are documented to a high standard and any changes are reported to the Nurse in Charge.
  • Being able to recognise the deteriorating resident and act appropriately, including reporting to Nurse in Charge.

GENERAL:


  • Be aware of the Protection of Vulnerable Adults and who the Adult Safeguarding Champion is. Contribute to the protection of residents from physical, sexual, emotional, institutional, neglect and financial abuse
  • Promote the residents living and social skills. Encourage their involvement in recreational and social activities and participate in these activities
  • Listen, talk to and support residents
  • Be compassionate, empathetic and demonstrate patience
  • Support nursing staff with medical and clinical procedures
  • Provide emotional, social, and spiritual support to residents and their families
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
- residents must consent for families to be informed about their needs.

  • Be aware that working in the caring field requires a high standard of teamwork so it is imperative that you can build good working relationships with colleagues
  • Build rapport with residents, their families, and friends
  • Maintain positive morale and atmosphere in the home to provide a good environment for both staff and residents
  • Be responsible when it comes to health and safety within the home and report any concerns to the Home Manger. This includes checking all manual handling equipment prior to use and reporting any faults/issues on
