Job summary:


The Joint Air Delivery Test and Evaluation Unit (JADTEU) is unique within Defence and responsible through design, trials and evaluation for enabling the delivery of: personnel by parachute; machines and materiel as internal aircraft loads, or helicopter underslung helicopter loads; and loads delivered from aircraft in flight by parachute.

JADTEU's intent throughout is to enhance Defence capability by assurance of safety, design compliance, efficiency and effectiveness.

As part of the Air and Space Warfare Centre (ASWC), JADTEU is recognised as the sole authority to conduct this activity through design assurance and physical evaluation of equipment.

JADTEU's products include trials reports, load preparation instructions, drills and procedures via publications. JADTEU is based at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

The Helicopter & Training (Hels & Trg) Section Technical Co-ordinator (TC) post forms part of JADTEU's publication system.

The TC is responsible to Officer Commanding Hels & Trg for the production of Helicopter Underslung Load Clearances (USLCs) and authorship of Hels & Trg Section Defence Air Publications (DAPs).


Elements of the role must be performed on-site with occasional off-site work; however, some remote working will be possible using personal issue MODNet and Publications laptops.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.


Job description:


  • As TC you are to liaise with the Helicopter Trials Management Officers (TMO) and the Rigging Team throughout all stages of the trial process to ensure that all data, imagery/illustrations are captured/generated to produce an USLC. Once obtained, you are to compile the information and publish in the relevant DAP. Additionally, you are to liaise with equipment sponsors and periodically update and amend all Hels & Trg DAPs and digitally publish on behalf of the document sponsor.

Person specification:


  • Preparing documentation for the DAPs 101A11051B / 1B1 by:
  • Maintaining a close association with the Photo Section and graphic illustrators to ensure suitable photographs are taken and illustrations created of equipment during static trials.
  • Drafting USLCs.
  • Coordinating the passage of USLCs throughout all stages of production.
  • Updating and producing draft amendments of existing USLCs
  • Liaising with equipment sponsors to ensure USLCs remain current.
  • Reviewing equipment designated for USL at the most suitable location
  • Regularly amending JADTEU Helicopter Underslung Load DAP 101A11051A.
  • Liaising with the underslung load Air Publication Sponsors (the RTSA) to ensure the correct allocation and control of documents, and to gain approval for final distribution.
  • Controlling the distribution of JADTEU Helicopter Underslung Load publications.
  • Providing advice to all members of the Section on the production of USLCs.
  • Assisting TMOs with other aspects of producing an USLC as required.
  • Providing advice to internal and external agencies on USLC and Helicopter Underslung Load Equipment (HUSLE) matters.
  • Regularly amending TIES Manual DAP 101A1114 as required by JHC Trg.
  • Fully acquainting with all inService HUSLE and USL rigging practices, techniques, and policy.
  • Attending HUSLE meetings as directed by OC Helicopter and Training Section.
  • Remaining current as Rigger Marshaller and should be prepared to operate with the Section, away from RAF Brize Norton, as part of a rigging team for planned uncleared load moves.
  • Attending the annual TDW-Live Conference to remain up to date with current and future thinking in the Technical Publications community.
  • Acting as the JADTEU Adobe InDesign SME (if SQEP) and supporting the JADTEU Technical Authors with their work.

Defence Rigger Marshaller, Adobe Certified Associate in Print & Digital Media Publication for Adobe InDesign.
