Investment
Foreign investment plays an important role in the UK economy.

Whilst only 4% of local business units in the UK were foreign owned in 2019, they were responsible for nearly 40% of UK business turnover and employed just over 5 million people.

Investment will be essential to delivering the government's wider objectives including levelling-up, clean growth, innovation, and job creation.


The Investment Directorate works to deliver economic growth to all the nations and regions of the UK through attracting and retaining all modes of inward investment.

Job description
As a Strategy Adviser in the Investment Strategy Team, you could work on a variety of different projects which could include the following:

  • Pro-actively helping to articulate the strategic priorities for investment and working with teams across the Investment Directorate to ensure that there is cohesion between long term direction and day-to-day delivery.
  • Identifying new opportunities and challenges which could have an impact on investment priorities and developing a strategic response.
  • Leading the development of priority investment projects requiring strategic thinking, defining the scope of the work, and the policy underpinning the work.
  • Analysis and evidence gathering, working with specialists to build the strategic case.
  • Problem solving with the ability to think practically and overcome barriers to delivering project aims.
  • Collaborating and working closely with investment delivery teams across DIT including in the UK regions, overseas, and sector specialists to help deliver project aims and objectives.
  • Communicating and collaborating with a range of important stakeholders, providing advice to senior leaders and Ministers, building relationships across Whitehall Departments involved in investment, and ensuring strategic projects are understood to achieve successful outcomes.

Hybrid working
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.


Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.


Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average.

If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

Person specification

Essential Criteria

  • Previous experience working in a strategy or policy role.
  • Experience delivering work in a fastpaced environment, demonstrating flexibility and sound judgement where there are competing pressures that require rigorous prioritisation to help navigate ambiguity and provide clarity.
  • Previous experience of building relationships and managing stakeholders to deliver workstream aims.
  • The ability to synthesise complex information into clear takeaways and recommendations using both qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • The ability to analyse evidence to inform decision making.
  • Organised, effective in managing own time, enthusiastic and keen to learn.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience working in investment policy or a keen interest in investment issues.
  • Experience working with Ministers and/or senior officials and stakeholders.
  • Leadership experience to help build the strategic projects team as it expands.
  • Experience of using research and analytical skills to ensure strategic and evidencebased policy making.
