Description

Background

SQS, Terrafirma, JDT and OMJ are all Local Delivery Partners (LDP's) who support Morrisons Utility Services, the London Construction Management Organisation (CMO) and all parties working together with Cadent to provide a relevant and professional gas trainee programme.

This training scheme will provide the right people with the opportunity to develop a career working on the Cadent gas distribution network for free and will be paid a fixed salary during this time.

We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated individuals from diverse backgrounds who are willing and want to start a career in the gas industry.

Previous experience is not required but a willingness to learn and progress is essential.

Trainee Programme

The overall objective of the Cadent workstream is to manage the replacement of Cadent's ageing gas infrastructure both in the ground and above ground.

Including traditional underground pipe replacement through to above ground pressure reduction facilities. This is delivered by SQS, OMJ, JDT and Terrafirma together with several other Local Delivery Partners.

If you are successful in joining the Gas Trainee programme, a comprehensive training scheme will be provided, and this will take you from day 1 through up to 12 months of training, including on job training where you will be working with a gas team and regular attendance at internal and external technical training courses.

The training programme has been designed to give you a full appreciation of the gas industry.

As you gain operational experience it will allow you to fulfil the role of a Network Construction Operative (Gas) Assistant

(NCO (G)1) and will provide the pathway for you to move into the role of a service layer.

Throughout the programme, you will be allocated to an experienced Team Leader, and will work with a team who will help you learn and understand the requirements and complexities of the role.

As a gas trainee you will have regular reviews and your progress will be supported throughout the programme by relevant mentors, trainers, and our wider management team.

Following completion of the training programme there will be further opportunities for progression into roles of main layer, team leader and site manager.

What does a NCO1 Gas Assistant do?

As a gas assistant you will support the service layers and main layers in carrying out a full range of gas network operations as required on all types of pipework, plant and associated equipment.

As your training progresses you will be involved in driving vehicles, loading and unloading of materials and supporting the receipt storage and issue of all site equipment and materials.

You will also carry out routine site maintenance and preparation work and gain an understand of how to ensure safety of fellow workers and the public.

You will learn how to excavate, backfill, reinstate and undertake any remedial works. You will also learn how to use appropriate mobile plant, mechanical and hand tools.

What does a Service Layer do?

Once you have qualified as an NCO1 Gas Assistant, and you are assessed as working competently, your development will continue, and you will progress through further training to enable you to qualify as a service layer.

The scope of the service layer role is broader and the key responsibilities within this role will include the laying and repair of pipes and mains systems to ensure homes and businesses are connected to the gas network.

The service layer will undertake and ensure that excavation, backfill, re-instatement, and service replacement is carried out to the required standards, including the safe removal of surplus and waste material.

Service layers provide appropriate advice, guidance, and support to team members or individuals engaged in the operation and maintenance of the gas distribution network.

As appropriate and where trained, service layers will also operate and use mobile plant, mechanical lifting and handling equipment, tools, and other equipment ensuring they are correctly maintained and stored.
