Description
British Transport Police (BTP) are recruiting for a permanent, part-time (14 hours per week) Investigating Officer. This role is paying £36, £14,611.86 pro-rata) per annum based within our Professional Standards Department in York. This role offers a blended approach of home and office-working.

We are a national police force covering the rail network throughout Great Britain, including the London Underground, ensuring the safety and security of nearly 3 billion passenger journeys and over 100 million tons of freight every year.

As an Investigating Officer, you will be required to:

  • Conduct complaint and misconduct investigations within statutory and regulatory frameworks, ensuring compliance with the statutory guidance issued by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC).
  • Identify and execute suitable investigative strategies that are proportionate to the investigation. This includes but is not limited to conducting recorded misconduct interviews under caution, pursuing suitable lines of enquiry and taking statements.
  • Prepare investigation reports and make recommendations to the Appropriate Authority regarding case disposal and the 'harm test'. Identify wider factors to be progressed such as organisational learning, poor or best practice principles and recognition.
  • Build and maintain relationships with governing bodies and stakeholders including the Police Federation and other support groups to facilitate positive exchange of communication thus increasing efficiency and effectiveness within the complaints and disciplinary process.
  • Take proactive steps to support the department's ambition to lead on professional standards nationally.

The successful Investigating Officer will be required to evidence the following:

  • Previous experience in a similar role, involving managing complaints and disciplinary processes
  • Excellent communications skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to remain impartial in emotionally challenging situations
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work professionally in a sensitive environment
