Purpose of the role:

  • To support the Strategic Communications team
  • Internal Communications, Government & Public Affairs, and Media Relations by delivering quality, engaging and accurate communications to internal and external audiences, to support the delivery of the MDU Corporate Strategy.
  • To work with the Communications Manager on the daily management and updating of the MDU Intranet platform (Synapse).
  • To liaise with Heads of Department and other key internal stakeholders across the company to source and produce engaging content for our communications channels.
  • To support the delivery of key internal events: Chief Executive's Forum; MDU Town Hall; Lunch & Learn sessions, as well as external stakeholder events.
  • To monitor and research external developments: advising and inputting to our public affairs and media work.
  • To support the Media team, where required, with campaign delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the Communications Manager to make daily updates to the MDU's intranet, and ensure important information is shared with colleagues in a clear and engaging way.
  • Come up with creative ways to communicate the company's strategy, goals, and values to our internal audience and, where appropriate, to translate these messages for external shareholders.
  • Build relationships with stakeholders across the organisation, and work with them to develop engaging content and stories around key topics and campaigns.
  • Support the Head of Department and the Communications Manager to deliver internal and external events including liaising with speakers and attendees and producing event comms.
  • At the direction of the Head of Department, monitor external developments to support our public affairs agenda.
  • Liaise with external stakeholders such as MPs, trade unions, medical royal colleges as directed by the Head of Department.
  • Collate evidence with colleagues across the business to support a twiceyearly audit of our performance with external stakeholders.
  • Provide support, as directed, to the media team during sizable media campaigns.

Qualifications and skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills including influencing, negotiating, and relationshipbuilding with the ability to deal confidently with senior figures in a polite, engaging way.
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills with experience in writing for a variety of different audiences.
  • Ability to gain credibility quickly in dealing with and advising senior managers and the Executive.
  • Strong speaking/presentation skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organisation, and problemsolving skills.
  • Comfortable dealing with change, ambiguity, and conflicting priorities.
  • Understands good communications and employee engagement best practice.
  • Previous experience in a communications role is desirable, but not essential.
  • Previous experience working with and editing an intranet platform is desirable, but not essential.

Key outputs and measures

  • The intranet is kept uptodate and is populated with engaging content.
  • External developments are closely monitored, and colleagues are appropriately notified.
