Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Hepatopancreatobiliary HPB Surgery/Renal Transplantation based at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.


Cambridge Department of HPB surgery serves a population of 3.5 million in the East of England (often beyond the region for complex cases).

This department, which is one of the busiest HPB centres in the country, offers a full range of specialist HPB services performing approximately 120 pancreatic resections and 130 liver resections per year with one of the best outcomes in the country.

The unit is a tertiary regional referral center for mínimally invasive surgery for pancreatitis and looks after about 200 cases of pancreatitis.

In addition, the unit also carries out approximately 300 laparoscopic cholecystectomies and about 40 laparoscopic/open adrenalectomies each year. The unit receives tertiary referrals from the region for palliative care procedures.

The unit enjoys close links with the Transplant Unit and strong research links with University of Cambridge and Cancer Research UK.

The Cambridge Transplant Unit is one of the largest multi-organ transplant centres in the UK.

providing kidney, pancreas, liver, intestinal and multivisceral transplant service to the adult population of the East of England and beyond.

More than 300 transplants take place each year.

Main duties of the job


One of the main responsibilities of the post holder will be to deliver on waiting list targets for laparoscopic cholecystectomy activity by undertaking a weekly all day theatre list as part of the HVLC programme.

In addition to supporting the major HPB resection work, the post holder will be required to contribute and support Adrenal surgery and Hepatocellular carcinoma surgical services as well.

There would be inpatient ward rounds and clinics at CUH as well as backfilling of the theatre lists at CUH in order to further improve theatre session usage.


The post holder would be required to participate in the consultant rotas for kidney and pancreas transplant and regional HPB cover.

There is no emergency general surgery on-call commitments.


You will be fully registered with the GMC and ideally have a CCT in HPB Surgery/Renal Transplantation or be within six months of award of CCT at the time of interview.
