POST:
Learning Mentor





REPORTING TO:
AHT with oversight for Behaviour





RESPONSIBLE FOR:

Ensuring that pupils undertake a pre-prepared lesson during a teacher's absence, support students and work closely to support the pastoral and curricular systems both operationally and administratively.






LIAISING WITH:
Lead Teachers/teaching/support staff/parents, as appropriate.





WORKING TIME:
37 hours a week, 39 weeks per year Monday to Friday.


SALARY/


GRADE:
Level 5 SCP 13
£25,950 - £31,153 (Pro rata actual salary starting at £22,187.25 depending on experience)


PURPOSE

  • To provide support and guidance to children and young people who are experiencing difficulties in learning due to social, emotional or behavioural problems or other issues.
  • To supervise a group of pupils during the absence of a teacher to ensure that pupils carry out a prepared lesson, maintain good order and to keep pupils on task, responding to questions and assisting pupils to undertake the set activities.

MAIN (CORE) DUTIES

  • Provide a mentoring service that meets the needs of students who require help in overcoming barriers to learning that prevent them from achieving their full potential, both inside and outside school.
  • To establish supportive relationships with pupils.
  • Model professional behaviour at all times in line with the staff code of conduct
  • Support the operational smooth running of the school
  • To support teaching, SEND and other staff in identifying those children who are significantly underachieving / disengaged from learning
  • Communicate, distribute and supervise work that has been set by the teacher in accordance with the school policy.
  • Manage the behaviour of pupils whilst they are undertaking this work to ensure a constructive and purposeful environment.
  • Deal with any immediate problems or emergencies according to the school's policies and procedures.
  • Collect any completed work after the lesson and return it to the appropriate teacher/administration officer.
  • Report back to the teacher as appropriate using the schools agreed referral procedures on the behaviour of pupils during the class, and any issues arising.
  • Provide general clerical/administrative support, e.g. input and retrieval of data into computerised and manual systems, taking registers, etc, as required.
  • To contribute to PSHCE, citizenship and enterprise as required.
  • Accompany staff and pupils on educational visits, trips and out of school activities as required and take responsibility for a group under the direction of the teacher/organiser.
  • Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school.
  • Attend and participate in regular meetings as required.
  • Assess work as required.
  • Participate in training and other learning activities as required.
  • Recognise own strengths and areas of expertise and use these to advise and support others.
  • To comply with the school's health and safety and safeguarding policies.
  • To supervise communal areas around school ensuring the behaviour of pupils remains at an optimal levels including lunch time.
  • To support the general welfare of pupils as necessary including after school activities.
  • To assist in the classrooms/library as required.
  • To work with small groups/individual pupils as required.
  • To invigilate and supervise during internal and external examinations.
  • Identify those students who would most benefit from the learning mentoring scheme and take the lead in drawing up a PSP with appropriate targets under the guidance of the line manager, SENCo, and SLT.
  • To undertake general administrative work as required and maintain a record of evaluations to support effective practice.
