Head of Nursing for Infection Prevention & Control


An exciting opportunity for an experienced and ambitious IPC nurse has become available to join the Infection Prevention & Control Team at Bedford Hospital as a Head of Nursing for Infection Prevention and Control (8b).


As Head of Nursing for the Bedford site's Infection Prevention and Control Team (IPCT) the post holder is responsible with the Director of Infection Prevention and Control (DIPC) for the prevention, monitoring, investigation and control of infection.


This is a senior role with key strategic importance, working closely with the Director of Infection Prevention & Control (DIPC).

The post holder will deputise for the Trust's Director of Infection Prevention and Control (DIPC) as required.


The post-holder will take a significant role in working towards alignment of policies and procedures with the development of high quality evidence based IP&C policies and practices throughout the Trust.

The post holder will provide support and guidance to Trust staff ensuring a patient focussed service.

The post-holder will oversee the line management of the IP&C nursing and administrative teams (IP&CT) on the Bedford site.

Acting as the expert nurse they will be accountable with the DIPC for ensuring the IP&CT maintain an effective and efficient system for the prevention, investigation and control of infections and any subsequent root cause analysis (RCA) and post infection review (PIR) processes in order to minimise the risks to patients, staff and the public.


The post holder will be required to establish and maintain effective and efficient communication networks with internal and external colleagues and corresponding organisations.


Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital services to a growing population of around 700,000 people living across Bedfordshire and the surrounding areas across two busy hospital sites in Bedford and Luton.

Using highly specialised knowledge, make a major contribution in defining the Trust's IP&C strategy by analysing and evaluating data and activities to improve the IP&C service.


Responsible for interpreting and using national legislative and advisory documents as Trust wide frameworks for managing IPC&T relating to service delivery and policy development.


To work with the IP&CT leads in writing of IP&C policies and guidelines for the whole organisation in accordance with up-to-date research findings and evidenced-based practice.

Using a robust approach, ensuring suitable multi-disciplinary involvement in development, wide organisational consultation on draft versions, and correct governance processes for approval and sign-off.


Lead on the planning and implementation of an ongoing Trust-wide programme of IP&C policy review, to ensure that all policies are in date and remain based upon analysis of the best available published evidence, national guidance, legislative changes and new and emerging infections and diseases.


Prioritise own work load and manage time effectively often adjusting schedules at short notice in response to often unpredictable work patterns e.g.

outbreak of infection and to lead on the planning and allocation of work for the nursing and administrative members of the IP&CT's.
