About the Role:


The Village Surgery (based in Harpenden and Wheathampstead) has a fantastic opportunity for an experienced medical secretary to work alongside our existing secretarial team to provide maternity cover from September 2023 for approximately 12 months.

Join their team on a part-time basis, for 20 hours per week, the surgery can be flexible with the days.


This is an essential front-line role at the practice, providing an efficient, comprehensive secretarial and administrative support service to the practice management team.


The main responsibilities of the role include:

  • Processing referrals using the electronic referral system (ERS)
  • Maintaining an accurate referrals database
  • Liaising with external agencies such as hospitals and community services, ensuring referrals are processed efficiently
  • Inputting data into the patient's healthcare records as necessary
  • Answering incoming phone calls related to referrals, transferring calls, or dealing with the callers request appropriately
  • Maintain patient and staff confidentiality in accordance with Data Protection legislation and Information Governance guidelines.

You will have the following skills and experience:

  • Experience of secretarial work in a GP practice.
  • Administrative experience and good organisation skills;
  • Sound knowledge of medical terminology;
  • Proficiency in the MS Office package, as well as excellent general IT skills and experience of working with a clinical system;
  • Ability to 'think on your feet';
  • Excellent communication skills and a friendly approach;
  • Understanding of the need to maintain confidentiality and data security, at all times;
  • Ability to multitask and to work accurately under pressure;
  • Knowledge of EMIS Web advantageous.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, as well as being comfortable working independently.
