Join us on the Journey... National Express are looking to recruit a UK Head of External Communications to deliver a best-in-class external communications service encompassing all of National Express' activity in the UK.


What you'll do:


  • Lead public relations activity for National Express UK (aligned with UK communications strategy and macro themes) to include
  • Proactive media relations thought leadership, promotion of spokespeople, industry comment, etc
  • Responding to the news and stakeholder agendas
  • Support of UK public affairs and stakeholder management activity as appropriate Responsibility for UK press office function, including media monitoring, NLA licensing, media training and spokespeople and 'on call' processes and systems.
Management of identifyingand agreeing activity that provides opportunity for recognition through awards or accreditation for all UK businesses

  • Work with department colleagues in Internal Communications and Public Affairs to support UK specific activities as appropriate
  • Management of two External Communications Managers and a number of executive/apprentice roles
  • Part of UK media oncall team (24 hour press office and incident response) with responsibility for reviewing and updating crisis communication documents
  • Work as a member of the UK Communications incident and crisis management team as and when required, including ontheground resources during any crisis situations.
  • Deputise for UK Director of Corporate Affairs and Communications as appropriate/necessary

What you'll need:


  • Significant experience of working in communications, ideally at Head of Communications level in a fastpaced, commercial environment
  • Significant press office experience managing a combination of proactive and reactive issues
  • Demonstrable trackrecord of leading PR campaigns that cutthrough to the general public
  • Proven track record in both proactive and reactive media relations, from highprofile consumer campaign delivery to issues and crisis management
  • Good understanding of social media and the challenges/ opportunities this offers corporate organisations
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Strong journalist contacts and proven track record of developing and maintaining mutually beneficial media relationships
  • Ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure
