Description

We are looking for a dynamic, forward thinking Livestock Ranger, with a passion for conservation grazing, regenerative farming and sensitive woodland management. Your role will focus on low density livestock management, as well as ecologically restorative land management.

Company description:

Founded in 2016, Beden is a not-for-profit wilding, farming for nature and residential community project, with a few small farm diversification projects in development.

It is based on a 220 acre estate on the edge of Dartmoor. It is our ambition to proactively reverse environmental degradation and enhance biodiversity.

Key to this will be getting the right animals grazing the estate in the right densities, while ensuring that those animals are looked after.

The river valley and hawthorn strewn moorland at Beden is home to flora and fauna now rarely found in the UK.

We are a small team at the start of a big and exciting project.

The management of the project is fairly dynamic and you will thrive if you have a 'muck in with whatever needs to happen' approach to your work.

You will need good overall knowledge of farm animals (confidence spotting early signs of issues, births, movements, vet meds etc.), as you will be responsible for the day-to-day care of the animals on the estate.

As the project develops, you could be caring for a small herd of cows , ponies (5-6), pigs (2), sheep (10), goats 6-8), a flock of chickens , a few geese and a raft of ducks.

We will in future look to utilise our extensive Moorland Rights, with grazing on the open moor.

Experience of woodland management and operations will be a big plus, as we have a sizeable work programme under Countryside Stewardship for the 40+ hectares of SSSI/SAC woodlands that form part of the estate.

Knowledge and experience of machinery care and maintenance will be highly advantageous, as we look to put systems of care in place to ensure all our operations are carried out with equipment that is well looked after and working as efficiently as possible.

We will consider flexible/part-time working arrangements for this role, but it will be advantageous for you to be able to provide some local weekend cover as and when needed.

You will form part of a wider team, but work closely with our Rewilding Ranger as well as our gardens and maintenance teams.

Key roles and responsibilities:

  • Leading on the delivery and coordination of daily livestock management and care
  • Ensuring supplies for food and bedding are stocked and planned for well in advance
  • Working with the Rewilding Ranger to deliver the grazing program required for ecological restoration across the estate
  • Assisting with all aspects of woodland management
  • Maintaining vehicles and land management machinery and helping to coordinate repairs and services as required
  • Assisting with grassland, hedgerow and wetland management as required
  • Assisting with other jobs across the estate as required by the wider team

Required experience and skills:

  • 3 years experience of livestock management and care
  • Using a range of farm/estate machinery (vehicles and tools)
  • Managing livestock in a conservation setting
  • Able to forward plan livestock requirements (food/bedding/meds)
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • A good understanding of Health and Safety issues
  • Working as part of a team
  • Valid driver's licence.

  • Forestry experience
