Band 7 Advanced Practitioner/Reporting Radiographer - General Imaging and DXA


Applications are invited for the position of Band 7 Clinical Lead Bone Densitometry Services, where you will work in a multidisciplinary environment that is challenging, rewarding, enjoyable and where your professional skills are respected.


As a Band 7 Radiographer you will be expected to manage the work area, providing professional clinical advice and support for Radiographers, Students and Assistant Practitioners under your supervision.

The post holder will be responsible for the assisting with the management of the Radiography services across the Trust.

Managerially and professionally reporting to the General Radiology Manager and responsible the Radiology Directorate Manager, the post holder is responsible for developing quality Radiography services that are efficient, responsive and meet the requirements of the Organisation and the wider community.


They will have responsibility for managing the Radiology staff in relation to rostering, annual leave, finance expenditure, appraisals, performance, and sickness absence.

Perform Duties expected of a radiation protection supervisor. This includes liaising with the trusts appointed radiation protection advisor based at Christies Hospital Manchester for advice in matters regarding radiation safety

  • Ensuring all local rules are updated and complied with by all staff.
  • Responsible for producing an annual report, regarding radiation safety in the department.
  • Attend and participate in the trusts IRMER policy group
  • To act as a practitioner as defined within IR(ME)R 2017. This requires an assessment of each referral and a decision made on whether to proceed with the examination as requested, modify or reject it.
  • To act as an operator as defined within the IR(ME)R 2017.This requires undertaking the full range of general Radiographic examinations as per departmental protocols.
  • Communicate complex critical details and information with referrers, clinicians and other health professionals.
  • To evaluate and to take professional responsibility for the quality, accuracy and adequacy of their own completed examinations and those performed by radiographers under their supervision.
  • Undertake and advise on a range of radiographic examinations procedures and protocols. This may lead to discussion and refusal of requests from doctors and emergency nurse practitioners using the IR(ME)R guidelines.
  • To provide professional clinical advice and support for radiographer's students and assistant practitioners.


Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is situated on the west coast of Lancashire, and offers a full range of district hospital services and community health services to a population of 1.6 million in Lancashire and South Cumbria.


The Trust provides services to the 440,000 residents of Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre and North Lancashire, as well as specialist tertiary care for Cardiac and Haematology services across the wider region.


We recommend that all individuals employed in patient facing roles, or those located on a ward or department where patients receive a service should be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

They will work alongside Radiographers within the Radiology and Bone Densitometry Unit at Clifton Hospital. This will involve undertaking and advising on a range of Radiology and DXA examinations, procedures and protocols.

They will perform advanced practice by providing clinical reports on Bone Density Scans and communicate the report information to the referrer or clinician managing the patient.

This carries medical responsibility for the diagnostic accuracy of the report and requires an ongoing audit of performance.

  • Perform an advanced clinical role for the Bone Densitometry Service both scanning and reporting aspects of the service
  • To provide technical expertise, support and administration to enable Research Projects requiring DXA Scanning Technologies
  • To act as a mentor and assist with the training of radiographers undertaking formal training to report Bone Density scans.
  • To produce and maintain a customised automated reporting system, with reference to current treatment recommendations and NICE Guidelines.
  • To evaluate and to take professional responsibility for the quality, accuracy and adequacy of own completed examinations and those performed by radiographers under their supervision in both imaging and Bone Densitometry.
  • Liaison with the Clinical Lead for Osteoporosis Services for the Trust in order to assist with reviewing and updating Protocols and Guidelines for the justification of referrals for Bone Densitometry.
  • Reviewing and updating of treatment advice based on current local Prescribing Advice Guidelines and NICE guidance reflecting developments and changes in the management and treatment of osteoporosis.
