To assist the Registered nursing staff and other health care professionals across the Unit and support the day to day services in the outpatient, theatre and day care unit areas carrying out a wide range of duties under supervision during each shift.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

  • Assist the registered nurse to deliver a high standard of holistic patient care ensuring that the patients' dignity and equality is maintained at all times.
  • Ensure that the principles set out in the Fundamentals of Care are incorporated into daily practice and applied to all patients
  • Maintain accurate and legible patient records. Accurately documenting information relating to patient care as instructed by the registered nurse.
  • Ensure positive communication with patients, relatives and carers whilst respecting issues relating to professional confidentiality.
  • Observe and report changes in patients' condition or behaviour to the registered nurse.
  • Provide psychological and physical support to patients prior to, during and following clinical procedures or investigations; this may be to assist them with seating, mobilising, awareness of their environment or directions to other areas of the department.
  • Act as chaperone for patients undergoing examinations or procedures and accompany patients to other departments taking appropriate documents and relaying appropriate messages under the direction of the registered nurse.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to emergency or unplanned situations.
  • Prepare ophthalmic environment and equipment for use within the clinical area regarding stock and cleanliness at the start of each session.
  • Undertake the responsibility of management and disposal of linen stock and other general housekeeping needs.

Rotation to outpatient clinical areas, day care unit and theatres during the working week are routine in this unit.

Work can include duties such as:

  • Prepare and stock clinic rooms / theatres prior to each session.
  • Record patient vision distance and near, recording these in the case notes.
  • Record manual handling assessment for the clinic setting at point of vision testing.
  • Undertake visual field analysis using computerized Field analyser; recording accurate patient ID on the printed document.
  • Conduct keratometry on all identified post operative patients, print and file in patient case notes.
  • Following a period of appropriate training and assessment undertake patient observations including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, urinalysis tests and blood glucose monitoring; recording findings in case notes.
  • Attend WHO safety huddle prior to the start of all clinical sessions.
  • Complete check list documentation prior to clinical interventions including Intra vitreal treatment and surgery.
  • Demonstrate correct procedure for opening sterile packs onto the scrub practitioner's trolley.
  • Assist to set up intra ocular surgical equipment.
  • Collect tracing identity stickers used during surgery and place in the case notes.
  • Select the identified intraocular lens as indicated in the case notes; check this with the scrub practitioner.
  • When in theatre crosscheck patient identity with the scrub practitioner to confirm correct patient, correct procedure and consent form completed accurately.
  • Act as circulating nurse during the perioperative period.
  • Gain IT skills to assist with activity input data on Orsos or equivalent.
  • Assist registered nurse in washing down theatre or clinical area at the end of the planned session and in the disposal of clinical waste bags.
