Hours - 35 hours per week (flexible working arrangements considered. Some out of hours working required as the Calderstones site is open 7 days a week)

  • Based Flexible/Hybrid working is available but the post holder does need to be present at The Mansion House, Calderstones Park, Liverpool every week

About the Role and Key Responsibilities


This new role leads The Reader's Communications and Marketing function, providing leadership both internally and externally in order to shape and share our stories.

The role has strategic and operational responsibilities for all aspects of communications and marketing - this includes our core work as a charity
(nationally and at Calderstones in Liverpool), as well as our expanding social enterprises (Café, Events, Ice Cream Parlour, Reader Bar and Restaurant).


As The Reader enters a new phase of development and leadership, there are some creative, big tasks ahead of us.

To grow and diversify our Shared
Reading movement and to develop and increase audiences for The Reader at
Calderstones.

As an experienced senior leader in the organisation, you will proactively work across teams to shape strategy and how The Reader takes on these big tasks.

The AD of Communications will drive income, increase engagement in our charitable work and strengthen The Reader's voice in order to raise profile of the work we do and why it's important


You'll be working to:

  • Continue to evolve a language for our mission which articulates the complexity and power of the Shared Reading experience in a compelling yet accessible way and inspires people to understand its place in the world
  • Build and manage The Reader's brand and reputation
  • Raise national awareness of our mission and how to get involved, such as group member and volunteer recruitment
  • Drive revenue by marketing the range of programming and social enterprise offers in Liverpool, working collaboratively with Programmes and Events teams and leading the work to strengthen our audience development strategy
  • Achieve our participation aims (linked to our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion strategy) through our marketing approach and through marketing our Front Door Key access scheme at Calderstones
  • Consider how The Reader's brand can be experienced through social enterprise and Calderstones, in order to develop and deepen relationships with our visitors and cross promote different areas of our work.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop tactics to strengthen The Reader's brand and positioning with key stakeholders and sectors in which we work
  • Increase voluntary income through the shaping and delivery of fundraising products and campaigns, ensuring that case for support is clear and compelling.
  • Position The Reader and our work at Calderstones as an ambitious social enterprise with potential to influence the national conversation on sustainable community, arts, health and wellbeing

Key Responsibilities

Knowledge and Skills

  • As The Reader's most senior Communications specialist, you will develop our communications and marketing strategy across all areas of the organisation, providing guidance to a range of teams and handson delivery as required
  • You will bring your specialist communications experience to work with the Directors Group on organisational strategy, ensuring a strong audience development and communications strategy runs through our longterm plans
  • Work with internal stakeholders from Shared Reading Services, the Literature Directorate, Development to develop our audience engagement and
Communications plan for national Shared Reading and develop a strong case for support and key messages for a range of channels

  • Take an active lead to shape new collaborative ways of working with internal stakeholders leading our programming and social enterprise work, to ensure we develop our audiences in a joined up way.
  • Act as the organisation's brand guardian and empower, inspire and equip all teams, volunteers and partners to communicate about The Reader's work as relevant in their roles, providing clear guidance on brand parameters and processes and providing communications advice.
  • Accountable for communication and marketing through The Reader's public
- facing website and social media channels.

  • Accountable for The Reader's box office operations and systems, including the development of new processes and purchase paths in consultation with the Box Office Manager and other stakeholders.
