  • We have an exciting opportunity in our Essex Operations department for an Advisor in our Field Teams.
We are planning for the future and to manage the risks of climate change. Working with partners we are reducing flood risk and making our environment a better place for people and wildlife.

Our Field Operations teams protect people and the environment by maintaining and operating our Flood & Coastal Risk Management assets and responding to flooding incidents.

We already have ISO 55001 certification and it's our ambition to deliver a world class asset management service.

In this role, you will:

  • Support the Field Team Leader by providing technical/professional advice, leadership, programme management directly within the Field Teams.
  • Work with colleagues to ensure our safety standards for operations maintenance and incident response are being maintained and continuously improved.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory obligations
  • Reservoirs Act (1975), CDM 2015, other legislation including HSWE assurance of internal maintenance delivery.
  • Through this collaborative working, guide, develop, manage and deliver an optimised routine maintenance programme of low risk or specialist activities.
  • Provide budget control and monthly reporting of key information to governance groups.
  • Build excellent working relationships with field team colleagues, and internal and external partners.


Your base location will be at one of our Essex offices/depots, and your work will be split across the office, the field and the area.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do.

You'll be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

The team- Field teams are the workforce of the Environment Agency.

You'll be based at one of our Essex offices or depots, working within one of our Field Teams and alongside multiple Field Teams in Essex.

You'll also work closely with our Asset Performance Teams. We deliver a maintenance programme on rivers and watercourses across the area.

As our 'frontline', Field Teams provide operational response during flood events by operating our critical river and coastal assets 24/- Experience/skills required- Your energy and enthusiasm, combined with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships are critical to the success of this role.


Essential Skills:

  • Full UK Driving Licence
  • Knowledge and experience of Asset Management
  • Aptitude for coaching and mentoring colleagues
  • Managing HSWE on construction/maintenance sites
  • Delivering projects/programmes in fieldbased/sitebased teams
  • Organisational skills and ability to work under pressure
  • Delivering results against performance targets
  • Experienced user of Microsoft Office (particularly Excel)
  • Knowledge of/willingness to learn our inhouse systems

Qualifications and Licences:
You will either have or we will support you to work towards:

IAM Certificate

  • Site Manager's Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)
  • IOSH Managing Safely/NEBOSH (Construction or General)
  • X63 CDM Principal Contractor accredited training (internal course)
