**Role of Department: This role will form part of the MI Underwriting Analytics team working as the Lead Analyst and supporting the Portfolio Management team as a dedicated resource. As the Lead Analyst, the role will involve the co-ordination of the UW MI Analytics team in tandem with the MI Insights Manager to assist them in providing data, analytics and reporting solutions to their respective business areas in line with MI standards. The position also includes supporting them in promoting the use of MI and progressing both technical and data resources. The nature of analysts within this area would be more niche and provide the opportunity to gain further and more in-depth insights. This Lead role would be expected to drive this effort, in addition to aiming for more pro-active engagement and establish a high performing, collaborative culture within the team. This will include constant communication with the MI Insights Manager and setting standards for MI team members.


Additionally, the role will have heavy engagement with the Portfolio Management team, to facilitate better data and data driven decisions benefitting our Underwriting strategy.

This will cover requirements gathering, liasing and communicating with Portfolio Management and Underwriters, reporting and creating high quality analytics and understanding indepth data queries and solutions.

Both this role and the wider team will be charged with the progression of the MI service to supply additional insights and trends to add value and information to end users wherever possible.

This includes actively seeking new sources of relevant data where applicable, and also explore potential of machine learning and other advanced capabilities to best support LSM and Portfolio Management.

The role will also require management of workload and co-ordination in line with Portfolio Management and UW teams expectations.

This should ensure the Portfolio Management team's MI and analytical needs are met with an emphasis on becoming a trusted business advisor, whilst remaining reactive to requests as they come in.

Activities will be split between developing new reports in PowerBI, other MS Power suite software, underpinned by SQL SSMS skills and some excel.

The remaining time will be spent supporting projects and business initiatives, enhancing data and analysis, ad-hoc tasks and working with the business to ensure the best approach is taken to data and reporting.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Support Portfolio Management function with data and analysis for Underwriting
  • Act as key contact for MI Department in this field and provide relevant business knowledge
  • Collect and understand requirements for new PowerBI reporting and deliver new reports.
  • Complete complex adhoc requests
  • Promote the use of data and the profile of MI within the Portfolio Management team and any relevant UW department
  • Investigating new software/concepts that may assist MI or the Portfolio Management team
  • Research new data availability that will enrich current data offerings and reports
  • Develop LSM culture of data driven decision making through training and education with Portfolio Management Team
  • Produce clear and concise reports to analyse business activity
  • Strong Stakeholder engagement and management skills
  • Strong team orientated mindset, can demonstrate skills in supporting others
  • An understanding of the insurance function and data requirements therein.
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel and PowerBI; can clearly demonstrate knowledge on building reports to a high standard
  • Strong business data analysis skills
  • Effectively interacts and communicates with clients and colleagues to understand what kind of information they need to produce it
  • Requires strong and relevant work experience gained in a similar role within the insurance industry (underwriting or broking)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL databases; can demonstrate how to write queries.
  • Shows initiative in undertaking tasks and the ability to prioritise stakeholder needs
  • Effectively uses and manipulates data from databases and I.T. systems to produce qualitative data for the business
  • An understanding of alternative reporting/data capture systems such as (but not limited to) alteryx or Qualtrics
  • Understanding of sharepoint functionality and Power BI administration
  • Progression towards ACII
  • Leadership experience
