Job Purpose

Working as part of a dynamic team, the Communications and Engagement Officer plays a critical role helping the UKRI-ESRC-funded Urban Big Data Centre (UBDC) achieve its overall mission by developing and delivering a comprehensive communications strategy, and ensuring communications and engagement activities are central to our research and data service activities.

This post is based at the UBDC, within the School of Social & Political Sciences at the University of Glasgow.

The post-holder will report to UBDC's Centre Manager and will work as part of the Centre's Management and Professional team.

This is a varied and exciting role, and the post-holder will be responsible for all aspects of external communications for UBDC, including outreach, impact and knowledge exchange (KE).

The role will involve the development of the next phase of the UBDC Communications and Engagement Strategy, establishing relevant communications objectives, and implementing an appropriate communication mix to ensure consistent and effective communication of key messages to all stakeholders.

They will promote the achievements and activities of the Centre, leading on all aspects of UBDC's digital communications, including managing and creating social media content, and maintaining and developing the UBDC web site.

The post-holder will work closely with the University of Glasgow's Central Communications team to develop and increase UBDC engagement with the media, building relationships with appropriate journalists and writing press releases as appropriate.

They will collaborate with the UBDC Events Officer to ensure the effective promotion of a busy events schedule, ensuring maximum impact from UBDC events.

They will play a vital role in promoting the work of UBDC across the University of Glasgow, and to our funders, UKRI-ESRC.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead on the delivery of marketing and communications for all UBDC activities including social media, press and promotion, and promoting events and similar activities.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of a communications and engagement strategy, aligned with the overall strategic objectives of the Urban Big Data Centre.
  • Research, write and post engaging content on relevant social media platforms and the UBDC web site, and encourage others within the Centre to contribute such content.
  • Take a leading role for social media and web site engagement analysis and reporting, developing appropriate content based on evidence and insight.
  • Make a leading contribution to plan, produce and create digital assets such as videos, infographics, and social media graphics.
  • To proactively develop and maintain effective working partnerships with colleagues in the Public Affairs and Communication Office at the University of Glasgow and their counterparts in other collaborating institutions to write media releases for local and national media to ensure consistent and effective communication of key messages to key audiences.
  • Monitor engagement with UBDC communications channels, report on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to the UBDC Senior Leadership Group and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Maintain, develop and oversee the UBDC website, creating engaging web content for the Centre's key audiences, including blog posts, new web functionality, data visualisations, and other content as required.
  • Take a leading role to identify, monitor, and review the effectiveness of marketing tools and techniques including evaluation of online activity to ensure most costeffective use of budgets and most effective reach and engagement for the Centre, including making recommendations on areas for improvement.
  • Proactively maximise use of communication and web tools to ensure the Centre fully exploits available and emerging platforms.
  • Liaise with external suppliers involved in marketing activities to ensure adherence to agreed deadlines and UBDC/University branding guidelines.
  • Undertake other reasonable tasks and duties as required by the senior management team

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:


A1 Either:
Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake this role having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in similar roles

Or:

Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9 (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in similar roles.

A2 Good knowledge of web development including detailed practical knowledge and understanding of web publishing and writing for the web.

A3 Excellent practical knowledge of current digital and social media communications techniques and trends.


Desirable:

B1 Degree-level qualification, preferably in a Communications
B2 Membership of a relevant professional body such as CIM or CIPR.
B3 Knowledge of social media management platforms and web analytics tool
