Description

Job Purpose-The CVR houses three Containment Level (CL)3 Facilities; The Clinical Samples Laboratory (CSL), The MacRobert Blood Borne Virus Laboratory (MacR BBV) and The Richard Elliott Biosafety Laboratories (REBL). Combined, these facilities underpin world-leading research in a wide variety of human and animal pathogens, including enabling animal and arthropod research.

The postholder will support the regulatory and operational responsibilities required at CL3 for REBL and MacR BBV and will deputise for CL3 Managers.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support CL3 Managers with the implementation of training requirements for all CL3 users including delivering specialist technical and compliance training and ensure training records are maintained and reviewed regularly.
  • Monitor compliance related to in-house safety critical checks, maintenance, and housekeeping, ensuring findings are reported to CL3 Managers in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day line management and supervision of CL3 technical support staff.
  • Responsible for daily operational aspects of the CL3 Laboratories, liaising with CL3 Facility Managers and technical support staff to ensure daily operations are organised in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Liaise with CL3 Managers and technical support staff to co-ordinate the purchase of consumables and equipment.
  • Contribute to reviewing and writing of standard operating procedures in conjunction with the CL3 manager for all CL3 facilities as a member of the CL3 Management Group.
  • Provide out of hours emergency response and support the CL3 Manager to develop and review business continuity procedures.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical problems, escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Responsible for supervision of external contractors within the CL3 laboratories.
  • Deputise for CL3 Managers as required.
  • Enhance the CVR CL3 operational profile and reputation by contributing to Health and Safety working groups and operational groups related to Hazard Group 3 work.
  • Keep up to date with developments in relevant enhanced biocontainment areas within the broader discipline to ensure contribution to CVR goals is optimised.
  • Maintain all necessary records in accordance with set requirements, keep up to date with developments or legal changes relevant to Containment level 3.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the CL3 Manager.

Qualifications

Essential:


A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role.


Or:

Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9 [Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational qualification level 4] or equivalent, [including professional accreditation with relevant formal training], and experience of personal development in a similar role.


Desirable:

B1 Degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
B2 Qualification in a relevant Health and Safety discipline.


Skills

Essential:

C1 Excellent teamworking and proven people management skills.
C2 Ability to multi-task and prioritise to ensure that safe and efficient operating levels are maintained.
C3 Proven training and supervisory experience.
C4 Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
C5 Excellent organisation/coordination skills encompassing liaison with different stakeholders to manage schedules.
C6 Proven IT skills and ability to create and manage record keeping databases.
C7 Experience of ensuring compliance with all health, safety and environmental standards.
C8 Experience of writing technical reports with clear recommendations for a diverse audience.


Desirable:

D1 Experience of working within a complex environment with multiple stakeholders.
D2 A working knowledge of University policies and procedures.


Experience

Essential:

E1 Significant relevant technical experience in handling agents in high containment.
E2 Previous experience of technical leadership or laboratory management in a research group.
E3 Evidence of project management experience.
E4 Significant in-depth technical knowledge.
E5 An understanding of the operational needs in a complex and high containment research environment.


Desirable:

F1 Experience of management duties at CL3.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £39,347 - £44,263 per annum.
This post is full-time (35 hours per week) and is open-ended.
