Job Summary
Working under the direct supervision of the nurse manager and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the healthcare assistant will assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care.
Duties and Responsibilities of Post
- Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual
- New patient health checks/ NHS health checks / Physical health checks
- Learning Disability Health Checks
- ECG recording
- Ear Syringing
- Wound dressing
- Suture removal
- Phlebotomy
- Administering B12 injections, Pneumococcal and shingles vaccinations, Decapeptyl
- Chaperoning duties
- Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/nurses
- Sterilising, cleansing and maintenance of surgical equipment
- Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording
- Surgical equipment and vaccine restocking and stock rotation
- Clearing and restocking consulting rooms
- Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions, including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations
- Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients' health and wellbeing
- Helping to raise awareness of health and wellbeing and how it can be promoted
- Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and wellbeing
Vocational Qualifications
A demonstrable commitment to training and professional development
Health Studies (or similar) NVQ Level 2 / 3
Experience Knowledge and Skills
- Experience of working within a nursing team
- Experience of dealing with vulnerable patients
- Phlebotomy
- BP monitoring
- New patient medicals
- ECGs
- Testing and processing of specimens
- Excellent communication skills
- Vascular health checks
- Experience using EMIS clinical system (desirable)
- Experience of working in primary care (desirable)
- Injections
- Suture/stitch removal
- Simple wound care
- Foot checks
