The successful applicant will oversee the day-to-day operational running of the luminescence dating laboratory, manage the commercial OSL services and participate in other relevant departmental activities as described.


The duties of the post-holder will include being responsible for providing technical laboratory training and services in support of all luminescence laboratory users; academics, research staff, research students and visitors.

They will conduct whole sample analyses for both commercial and research/student projects. They will also undertake an agreed amount of undergraduate teaching and marking in areas relevant to their expertise, and participate in some School administration (e.g. membership of relevant committees).

The post-holder will ensure that the laboratories are kept clean and work areas organised to ensure that the laboratory meets both quality and regulatory requirements.


The post-holder must hold, or be close to completion of a PhD/DPhil in a relevant scientific discipline (physical geography, chemistry, or physics with geochronology elements) and have experience working in laboratory environments, to defined procedures, where quality assurance is essential.

Experience of luminescence dating including sample preparation, sample measurement, data processing and statistical analysis including understanding the principles of sediment dating and other aspects of environmental analyses from sediments is essential.

The post-holder will have experience of working with hazardous chemicals and/or ionizing radiation and of contributing to laboratory management. Knowledge of health and safety regulations in a laboratory environment is essential.

This position is fixed term for 3 years with the possibility of extension depending on funding.
