Shift Team Leader - Kit Assembly


Due to continued growth, Ortho Clinical Diagnostics are actively looking to recruit a Shift Team Leader for our Kit Assembly Production Department, this role reports into the Senior Group Leader for Kit Assembly.


About Ortho, Pencoed:

Ortho Clinical Diagnostics has been manufacturing products in South Wales for over 40 years.

Our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, based in Pencoed, employs over 500 people who are involved in the manufacture and supply of clinical laboratory and immunohematology products to a global customer base.

Our Pencoed team manufacture a large menu of immunoassay products encompassing a range of disease categories.

In addition to the continued support our growing scientific community provide to our existing products, we are also harnessing our Research & Development capabilities for the creation of novel new content to expand our immunoassay menu.


We are proud to be a global hub for critical manufacturing lines, and we have recently expanded our capabilities with three new state-of-the-art manufacturing lines to produce a comprehensive suite of immunohematology products for blood typing and cross-matching of blood donor units.

Your new role:


As a Shift Team Leader, you will be responsible for organizing and leading a shift responsible for the production and testing of finished products to meet business output needs within a high-volume area of our facility.

You will be responsible for leading the manufacturing process and the key performance indicators for the team, whilst acting as the focal point for communication with other areas of the business.

This is a shift role working on 4 shifts on; followed by 4 shifts off (days, 12 hour shifts) pattern.


What you'll be doing:


  • Prioritize and schedule work to meet business needs.
  • Work on production line as necessary to cover breaks and absence within the team.
  • Able to support other groups on Shift.
  • Takes lead out of hours for site emergencies liaising with external groups as required.
  • Run daily departmental meetings, presenting metrics and highlighting issues to support functions.
  • Able to monitor and analyse production data (e.g. OEE & FPA).
  • Attends crossfunctional production meetings (e.g. OTIF communicating current status).
  • Keep accurate records and measures of production methods, test results and performance indices.
  • Operate in line with company quality standards such as ISO9001 and appropriate regulatory authorities such as US FDA or TUV.
  • Ensure team members operate in line with standards.
  • Acts as focal communication point with other work areas.
  • Provide the leadership and training required to achieve empowered and motivated individuals within the team.
  • Promote and champion effective cooperation within and between teams.
  • Carry out employee appraisals to agreed timetable and assist in the provision of development plans, selection and recruitment of employees.
  • Identification and implementation of initiatives resulting in productivity gains.
  • Lead decision maker out of core hours, escalating as appropriate.
  • Actively manages attendance and performance of direct reports.
  • Assists in preparation for audits by external bodies.
  • Able to present an overview of production processes to external visitors as & when required.

What you'll need to succeed:


  • Degree qualified within a Scientific, Engineering or Manufacturing related field. Or possessing a minimum of 5 years Operational experience, leading production teams within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience of working within a highly regulated environment is desirable.
  • The ability to work the described shift pattern.
  • Familiarity within highly automated production process.
  • Demonstrable experience of highvolume flow production environments.
