As a Machine operator you will support the Production and Maintenance Team Leaders in carrying out all Production and Maintenance related tasks relating to wheelset overhaul safely and in line with Industry specification.

Arlington Fleet Services is based at Eastleigh Works in Hampshire on a 46-acre site which includes 14 acres of workshops.

We were formed in 2004 by a group of experienced railway engineering professionals and our business is constantly expanding. The Company supplies many rail maintenance and refurbishment services including;

  • Routine maintenance of a variety of locomotives, coaching and other stock Mobile services which are the most extensive in the UK including rerailing and heavy lifting and wheel set changes on site.
  • Bogie overhaul.
  • Heavy repair including collision repairs, rewiring, interior refurbishment and overhaul
  • Paint shop.
  • Rolling stock storage.
  • Workshop facilities to other customers.
  • Train stabling and additional related storage.

What is the opportunity
We are looking for an experienced Machine Operator, who will be mechanically minded with high attention to detail.

The roles involve supporting the Production and Maintenance Team Leaders in carrying out all mechanical related tasks related to the overhaul / build of wheelsets for stock.


What experience & qualifications do I need

  • Rolling Stock, Mechanical Fitting, Heavy Engineering,
  • High attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Must be well organised
  • Demonstrate the ability to read diagrams and schematics
  • Must possess particular practical, productive and mechanical engineering skills
  • Competent at operating hand tools, test instruments and equipment
  • City & Guilds / NVQ level one, level two and / or level three qualifications in Engineering/Mechanic discipline

What you will do

  • Set up machines (calibration, cleaning etc.) to start a production cycle
  • Control and adjust machine settings (e.g. speed)
  • Feed raw material or parts to semiautomated machines
  • Inspect parts with precision and measuring tools
  • Take responsibility of manufacturing products and goods to a high standard of quality by setting and operating CNC machine
  • Work to a required standard and make any machine adjustments as needed
  • Plan machine workload by studying works order, drawings, material specs and required geometric dimensions and tolerances
  • Safe material handling onto and off machine including storage ready for production
  • Ensure required daily maintenance of machine is carried out as required and advise supervisor of any issues immediately
  • Prove out programs at the machine ensuring the highest quality is maintained at all times
  • Compliance with Company Health and Safety procedures
  • Ability to undertake mechanical installation work safely and following industry best practice, client specifications and Industry Safety Regulations.
  • Test operation of machines periodically
  • Fix issues that might occur during the shift
  • Check output to spot any machinerelated mistakes or flaws
  • Keep records of approved and defective units or final products
  • Maintain activity logs
  • Ability to undertake mechanical installation work safely and following industry best practice, client specifications and Industry Safety Regulations.

Education Level

  • Relevant NVQ or City & Guilds certification (desirable)
  • Minimum two years' experience in similar role

This role is in a heavy engineering environment, which means at times there will be low-level bending and heavy lifting.

It is also important to point out that our site does get very cold during the winter months.
