The Young Black Men and Mental Health programme is a pioneering and innovative programme designed to improve mental health wellbeing outcomes for young black men and improve their life chances.


Islington Council and the NHS, following success in receiving investment funding equating to £1.6 million, are leading this innovative mental health programme which will help to create a better future for young black men and boys, and support the council's and NHS efforts to tackle inequality.


The three-year programme, named "Young Black Men and Mental Health", will see a holistic approach to addressing mental health issues among young Black males in Islington, with the aims of improving personal mental health and wellbeing, aspirations and life opportunities, while reducing exclusions.

We are establishing a new Elevate Innovation Hub as part of our pioneering young black men and mental health programme.


The new Elevate Hub will comprise of a small multidisciplinary team of Clinical Psychologists and Elevate Therapeutic Practitioners designed to provide a suite of holistic psychological therapies and youth work interventions for young people aged between 11-25 who are at risk of poor health outcomes, serious youth violence and exclusions from schools.

It will provide a trauma informed outreach support offer through Elevate key workers to build trust and support young black men in the local community by bridging mental health services to the front door of communities.

As a Elevate Therapeutic Practitioner you will provide a combination of youth work and psychological interventions.

Each Elevate Practitioner will support up to young people between the ages of 11-25; Provide direct 1-1 support; co develop bespoke goals plans.

The Elevate Innovation Hub will be clinically managed and supervised by a clinical lead from the Camden and Islington NHS trust.


As a Member of the Elevate Innovation Hub, you will:

  • Be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people / vulnerable adults in your care and those who you come into contact with.
  • Hold a professional psychology/ psychodynamic/ MST/ counselling qualification (with at least 1 year of post qualification counselling experience).
  • Be experienced in and passionate about working with young people aged 12yrs 21yrs (with a minimum of three years' experience working with young people within this age group and in any capacity).
  • Be able to work in an integrative way and to be familiar with person centred, psychodynamic, CBT and solution focussed theoretical approaches.
  • Have a creative and flexible approach to working with a variety of issues and complexity and with young people from varied and often vulnerable backgrounds.
  • Have experience in working closely with partner agencies (CSC, Police, YOS, Schools, Families First, CAMHS, etc.) in advocating for young people and in sign posting to other services when needed.
  • Have experience and training in safeguarding young people.
  • Have experience in working with trauma, gang related issues, sexual abuse and sexual trauma, self harm, suicidal ideation, DVA, bereavement and CSE.
  • Excellent communication skills.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To provide emotional and therapeutic support to young people (12 to 21 years). This support will aim to build a trusting and robust relationship whilst supporting individuals to improve selfconfidence, selfesteem, selfcare and resilience.
  • To identify, process and resolve negative thought processes, implement constructive coping strategies and empower them to fulfill attainable life goals. Counselling will also provide a safe, respectful and nonjudgemental space to gently explore and process trauma at a pace set by the young person.
  • To carry a case load of young people.
  • To manage appropriate professional boundaries within the relationship.
  • To attend clinical supervision as well as monthly team meetings.
  • To maintain confidentiality and other policies and procedures, in accordance with the organisation.
  • To maintain records for monitoring, evaluation and tracking purpose, counselling reports plus service evaluation.
  • To attend any relevant staff training days.
  • To take responsibility for own professional development.
  • To keep up to date with development in the field of counselling.
  • To adhere to Islington Council's policies and procedures.
  • To demonstrate a clear knowledge of the importance of equal opportunities, and to be able to work with differences such as class, race, sexual orientation, physical ability, and an awareness of the issues for individuals who experience discrimination.
  • To be able to manage you own practice in terms of keeping to scheduled timetables, record keeping, data input, receiving clients in an open and efficient manner and maintaining order in a shared workspace.
  • To undertake other duties commensurate to the grade of the post.
