We are looking for a passionate and motivated Trainee Assistant Reserves Officer (Solent) to assist our South Coast reserves team on a range of daily tasks, comprising mainly of practical estates management, biological surveying, livestock handling and leading volunteer groups.

We are seeking a Trainee Assistant Reserves Officer (Solent) to join our cause.


This Fixed Term role involves:

Practical Estates Management


Working alongside the Reserves Officer and Assistant Reserves Officer to manage and create suitable spaces for wildlife across the South Coast estate, as well as maintaining public access and upholding the Trust's image.

Our work varies through the seasons but includes livestock fencing, infrastructure maintenance, tree felling, grassland management, and rotational scrub cutting.

Helping to lead and manage volunteer work parties on different tasks.

Livestock Management

Handling and moving livestock for targeted conservation grazing.
Welfare checks and TB tests.

Biological Surveys

Carrying out and liaising with volunteers on butterfly surveys.
Riverfly monitoring.
Wintering bird surveys.
Tree surveys.
Rapid condition assessments.

Experience

Practical skills including estate maintenance and conservation works
Working with groups of volunteers
Managing habitats for wildlife

Knowledge

Knowledgeable of principles and issues affecting habitat management and species conservation

Knowledgeable with regards to wildlife legislation, in particular protected species and habitats

Able to identify common species of UK flora and fauna

Qualifications and Skills

Right to work in the UK

Qualified or working towards an academic or vocational qualification in relevant area (e.g., Conservation Management, Ecology, Environmental Science.)

Competence in basic word processing and spreadsheets

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Personal Qualities

Interested in wildlife conservation

Confident in working in and around machinery, water, and livestock

Approachable and have a friendly manner

Able to work closely within a small but very busy team, but also use own initiative
