Background:


HM Courts and Tribunals Service is responsible for the administration of criminal courts, civil courts, family courts and tribunals in England and Wales working with an independent judiciary to provide a fair, efficient and effective justice system.

Currently, HM Courts and Tribunals Service is embarking on a period of significant change which will require strong leadership in this critical role, operating in a culture of openness and honesty.


Overview:


The County Court deals with the vast majority of civil (non-criminal) matters.


Unlike criminal cases - in which the state prosecutes an individual - civil court cases arise where an individual or a business believes their rights have been infringed.

Types of civil case dealt with in the County Court include:

  • Businesses trying to recover money they are owed
  • Individuals seeking compensation for injuries
  • Landowners seeking orders that will prevent trespass.
All County Court centres can deal with contract and tort (civil wrong) cases and recovery of land actions.

Some hearing centres can also deal with bankruptcy and insolvency matters, as well as cases relating to wills and trusts (equity and contested probate actions) where the value of the trust, fund or estate does not exceed £30,000, matters under the Equality Act 2010, and actions which all parties agree to have heard in a county court (e.g.

defamation cases).


Key Responsibilities:


Team Leader

  • To line manage and support staff, ensuring adequate training and development is embedded.
  • To provide a comprehensive and efficient frontline service to Court Users and direct them to the relevant support and other resources related to the management of their claims.
  • Handle correspondence, deal with enquiries and assist with controlling workflow delegating actions to other team members where necessary.
  • To develop and maintain comprehensive knowledge of the relevant Civil Procedure Rules to be able to make decisions on more complex queries.
  • Work with others to effectively and efficiently respond to challenging customer queries and complaints.
  • To support and facilitate effective working relationships with the judiciary, staff and court users.
  • Ensuring governance controls and best practice is in place and adhered to.
  • Prepare statistical analysis when required.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

Relevant computer skills to undertake the level of work required.

Some experience of managing a team


Other Duties:


The post holder is required to work in a flexible way and undertake any other duties reasonably requested by line management which are commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility of this post.


Security Level:

If you do not meet the above requirements, you may still be considered if, for example:

  • You've been serving overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of HM Government
  • You were studying abroad
  • You were living overseas with parents
  • In such cases you will need to be able to provide referee cover for the period(s) of residence overseas. The duration of overseas residence and the country of abode will also be taken into account and a local police check carried out.
