We are looking for a Collections Care Technician to support the ongoing care of the collections at the Coventry Transport Museum.

The museum houses the largest publicly owned collection of British vehicles in the world.

The collection, which is Designated by the Arts Council as of national and international significance, consists of 250 cars and commercial vehicles, 300 cycles, 120 motorcycles and over a million archive and other items.

You will work as part of a dedicated collections team to ensure that the collections are cared for to the highest conservation standards and to make the collections accessible through displays, events and other activities.


The main responsibilities are:

  • As part of the Collections team to determine the work priorities in relation to the Culture Coventry collection which includes cars, motorcycles, large commercial vehicles, cycles and smaller objects relating to the motor industry.
  • To undertake conservation and restoration where specialist skills allow and to work with external conservators and researchers where appropriate.
  • To develop and maintain a record of the condition of the collections and any treatment carried out using photographic, computer and manual systems to Spectrum standards.
  • To assist in the maintenance and development of the permanent displays and museums stores, preparing items for exhibition or loan for exhibitions and events.
  • To ensure the ongoing maintenance of vehicles in the Transport Museum's running collection in preparation for external events.
We are looking for a self-motivates team player with a professional and friendly manner who can bring:

  • Knowledge of vehicle conservation and restoration work carried out in a heritage environment.
  • Knowledge of the workings of modern and historic motorised vehicles.
  • Experience of working on the conservation, restoration and maintenance of historic vehicles and/or other collections.
  • Knowledge and understanding of ethics and issues relating to the care and conservation of heritage collections.
  • Experience of documentation systems relating to the care and conservation of heritage collections.
  • A willingness to keep up to date with changes in the sector.

Scope:


Culture Coventry Trust and Coventry Sports Foundation are operating as CV Life, so that the scope of this Job Description as a CV Life document extends to cover the employment of employment contracts held with either Culture Coventry Trust or Coventry Sports Foundation.


Overall purpose and objective of the role:

To be responsible for the ongoing care and conservation of displayed and stored items in the museum collections held by Culture Coventry on behalf of Coventry City Council.


Main Duties of the Role:


  • As part of the Collections team to determine the work priorities in the Culture Coventry collection which includes cars, motorcycles, large commercial vehicles, cycles and smaller objects relating to the motor industry,
  • To also support collections in relation to local history, natural history, archaeology, fine and decorative art and archival material when required.
  • To undertake conservation and restoration where specialist skills allow and to work with external conservators and researchers where appropriate.
  • As appropriate, to carry out research, network opportunities and training to develop knowledge and good practice around the care and conservation of collections.
  • To develop and maintain a record of the condition of the collections and any treatment carried out using photographic, computer and manual systems to Spectrum standards.
  • To purchase materials and equipment required for the treatment of the t collections.
  • To advise the Curatorial Manager on any conservation work which cannot be undertaken internally and recommend appropriate action.
  • Working with the Collections team, to ensure that items on display and in store are cared for to the standards expected for museum Accreditation.
  • To assist in the maintenance and development of the permanent displays and museums stores, preparing items for exhibition or loan for exhibitions and events
  • To courier or accompany loans to exhibitions and events offsite when required.
  • In conjunction with the rest of the collections team, to maintain appropriate collection care standards relating to legislative obligations, storage, movement, handling and display of objects. To be willing to be part of the response team for Culture Coventry's Emergency Response Plan.
  • To ensure the ongoing maintenance of vehicles in the Transport Museum's running collection in preparation for external events.
  • To support environmental monitoring of exhibition and stores as directed by the Curatorial Manager.
