Speech and Language Therapist Band 5 to 8 High Wycombe

TLTP have a vacancy for a Band 5 to 7 Speech and Language Therapist to join a specialist team based in High Wycombe.

This is in a Special Needs School which educates children and young people with a broad diversity of complex needs, including Profound and MultipleLearning Disabilities (PMLD), Severe Speech, Language and Communication Needs, and Complex Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC).

Band 5 to 8 Speech and Language Therapist

Main Duties will include:


To complement the work of the therapy team, contributing to a range of activities and to work collaboratively as part of a professional team.

To carry out clinical observations to contribute to the assessment and management of a wide range of language and communication difficulties in young people from 3-19 years of age.

Contribute to effective planning and preparation of sessions.
To carry out SaLT interventions in a variety of settings, including classes, seeking guidance and supervision of senior therapists.
To use communication, reasoning and negotiation skills to establish a therapeutic relationship with pupils, managing barriers to communication.
To encourage the social and emotional health and wellbeing of pupils.

To utilise opportunities throughout the school day to promote communication strategies and approaches across the school, modelling these approaches for all staff and evaluating the impact on pupils.

To manage a specific caseload, prioritising individual needs.

To support Dysphagia (Eating and Drinking) referrals and caseload, implementing feeding advice and strategies, within agreed clinical competencies (with training and supervision as required).

To maintain accurate and up to date documentation of all intervention with pupils in line with legal and departmental requirements.

To model and demonstrate tasks to the pupils, staff, parents and carers.
To organise and prepare activities/equipment to enable students to participate in SaLT interventions.

To liaise with SALT and SALT assistants to feedback results of observations/therapy programmes, to analyse the response to treatment, and development of the student's skills, and discuss any possible changes.

To work collaboratively and openly with professional colleagues in other services.
Actively engage in clinical supervision and be aware of ones own clinical competence, seeking support as required.

To be aware that a student may not be able to co-operate or comply in an activity and may present with behaviour that challenges.

To form productive relationships with students who may be under stress and/or have challenging communication difficulties.
To be responsible for caseload management of SALT assistants, providing appropriate support and training.
To develop the communicative environment and support and develop student's communication skills.

To recognise potential communication barriers or conflict when they occur, and seek advice and support to resolve these issues, this may relate to working with an individual student, member of staff or family.

To plan use of time effectively and ensure quality of service delivery.
To use IT resources effectively to produce AAC materials (symbols, photos) to support pupils' communication.
To develop resources to facilitate the implementation of therapy interventions.
To contribute to identifying, planning and delivering formal in-house training, for appropriate clinical areas.
To work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary team to set pupil targets and monitor pupil progress.
To produce reports, including annual review documentation.
They are looking for an Speech and Language Therapist who has:
Membership of the Health & Care Professional Council and an Enhanced DBS

2 full years working as a Paediatric Occupational Therapist in a specialist setting and used both informal and formal standardised assessments.

Knowledge of specialist education and the principles of safeguarding vulnerable students
Excellent communication, ICT and organisational skills.
Comply with GDPR and HCPC RCOT regulations
