The Role:

Cartographer


As a cartographer at S&P Global Commodity Insights you will use your design skills to collaborate with our award-winning global team of commodities experts to tell compelling, enlightening geospatial stories.


The Team:


The cartography team provides geospatial analysis, cartographic design, and data visualization expertise to support S&P Global Commodity Insights mission to provide valuable insights to the energy and commodities markets.


You will be part of the Design, Translation, and Publishing group that works closely with the news, analytics, consulting and events teams, operating as a visual journalist.

The team is a small, dedicated group based around the globe producing thousands of graphics a year across 100s of different publications and delivery channels.

Whether you are creating a simple locator map or a complex, immersive online interactive experience, you will be challenged to use the full force of your creativity every day.


What's in it for you:


You will partner with our experts in the commodities and energy industry and influence the geospatial and visual storytelling for Commodity Insights products and publications.


You will work on a variety of projects, using various tools and platforms, to create visualizations from the industry's leading geospatial repositories.


Responsibilities:

Collaborate with editors and industry experts to create cartographic content for Commodity Insights publications and reports


Data analysis and preparation:
Utilize GIS software to analyze, process, filter, and symbolize data in preparation for display on maps


Map production:
Utilize graphic design and GIS software to create sophisticated maps and graphics.


Software used but not limited to: Adobe Creative Suite; Avenza MaPublisher; ESRI ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript; Flourish.
Utilize multiple data sources and formats to generate content for maps. Review sources and understand data processes to collect the most timely and accurate data available.
Manage projects


What we're looking for:


Basic qualifications:

BA or BS in cartography, geography, graphic design, geographic information systems, or related disciplines.

Understanding of the principles of cartographic design including thematic and statistical mapping, color theory, layout design, hierarchy, and data visualization as it applies to print, interactive and web-based mediums.

Understanding of the principles of geographic information systems including database management, data types, coordinate systems, map projections, and analytical and statistical functions.

Ability to analyze and integrate large geographic datasets and translate various geospatial formats into an effectively designed cartographic deliverable.
Ability to work in a deadline-oriented work environment
Proficiency in using Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign in the production of cartographic products.
Proficiency in ESRI ArcGIS Pro; familiar with ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise
Familiarity with Avenza MaPublisher.
Portfolio featuring maps and/or graphics that demonstrate the proficiencies above.


Preferred qualifications:

Proficiency in Avenza MaPublisher
Prior experience with energy industry related data
Experience working in visual journalism field
Able to work effectively in a team environment or individually in self-guided projects
Experience with geographic research
Experience with ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript, D3, and other visualization coding languages


Location:
Remote within USA, able to work on ET zone.


Compensation: 70-77k USD/year base, plus benefits and bonuses.
